OA progression.

Right so I have OA(as if anyone on here didn't know that already! ), so how does it go, as it stands I have periods of calm followed by lots of pain etc and then the cycle repeats.

Now my question, as the illness progresses with time will the bouts of pain become longer and longer until it blurs into one constant mega flare and I am forced to have two new knees or knee caps, or can it go on as it is now for ever?.

    Morning Melly,

There really isn`t a simple answer to your question, this disease is a vicious ****, and treats everyone differently. I think you probably realise, though, that it doesn`t get any better.

I had a TKR nearly three years ago, and it, quite simply, gave me back my life. If you get the opportunity, go for it!........Ange.

Hi Val and Ange, well Val it's just that while the pain has all but gone I can think a bit straighter so my mind is free to wander unlike the shell it's sitting in!.
Ange thanks for the reply, hmm you have a point, I must admit when I posted it the words piece and string were floating around in my head (there's enough room in there), but in a way it makes sense to ask, I like so many on here are on an incredible learning curve with OA and RA, for me one minute I was running around a power station on 12 hour shifts the next a pain bomb went off close by and blasted shrapnel into my knees ie both of em!.
So that's what I have to look forward to a double flipperectomy some time in the pain soden future, what joy!.
Sorry was going off on one a bit there!.

    Hi Mel,

It has stages and 1st and 2nd stage comes and goes. 3rd stage is endless and end stage isn't as painful but is more restrictive in movement terms cus of the damage.

I got a lot of 3rd and some end and now a days some 2nd as well and the breaks in the second batch can be quite long. I hope you continue to have the remission bit and you might so don't abandon all hope. I'm not sure at what stage you get offered the replacements, I think that depends on a few variables and well but it does mean you lose a lot of the pain. Hope yours stays quiet for some time. Cris

    Hi Val,

Its not fair but why any of us? I don't think that’s ever been established really? My oa is in joints I injured and joints I haven't the pa well who knows where that came from, where ever can have it back though  I don't know what the clinical definition of the stages is properly but years back I was told 1st and 2nd is when it starts off 3rd is ossification (and boy did my back like that one  ) and then end its burnt out and done its damage....... I don't know how right it is though. The difference between 2nd and 3rd is there is no real let up but the pain changes too and well it loses some of its intensity (though it can still do it) and is just an endless grinding. However decent pain relief is what you need and it could be years before you get the next stage.

Hey not all of the types come up in bloods you know so just keep a good history of it all for your self. I really hope you get a long time before it changes. I have no idea what tie scales anyone gives. It really can be years. Luv Cris who is off to look for a goose  xx

What I would like to know is what part is the OA (my chiropractitioner says that I have OA)
and what part is the RA or PA?
Then there is the Bursitis. What part of the pain is that?

I know the pain goes down to my knees and my knees are dreadfully painful aswell.
In a letter my consultant wrote to my dr, he put down degenerative arthritis. That's OA isn't it. If it is, how come it didn't show up on Xrays. So must be in 1st stages. It's all a mystery to me

All i Know is that last night was one of the most painful ones I have ever had from the top of my head to my knees. Luckily me feet were ok this time.

Hi, Im in stage 2 OA & have Fibromyalgia aswell. So ive got the issue with joints. Both knees, both hands & wrists, neck cervical & lumber spine plus a prolapsed disc at L4/L5.Hips are slowly joining in too.
Then the Fibromyalgia causes widespread muscle pain, headaches, IBS & fatigue.
I have months of chronic pain from the joints, then like at the moment im having a little less pain from my joints. The pain never goes away with me but has different stages through the day & night, depending on how much ive done, then masses of pain for months on end.The most annoying thing i find is getting comfortable, either sitting or laying down.
The fibromyalgia affects all my muscles, ligaments & tendons. I get no relief from this at all. Ive also got Tenosynovitis in my right wrist.
The fatigue, headaches, sickness, constant pain & IBS makes me pretty miserable most of the time.
Ive never in over 2 years had a painfree day,ive had better days but never a painfree one.
I'd jump at the chance of new knees, but my Rhymy reckons ive not got any cartilage damage(dont how he can say that when ive not had x-rays on them)
I know this doesnt really answer your question, but it does give you an idea of the pain with OA, it affects each of us differently & all have different pain levels.
I hope you find some answrs to your question & cant you push to get your knees sorted.?

    Hi

I think it depends on the individual. I have OA (as everyone also knows) and both knees have to be replaced. The pain in one knee started 10 years ago and I was told it was sciatica! I have gone downhill in the past 2 years quite rapidly and the discomfort for me is worse. I have to rest a great deal these days after doing the simplest of tasks. I can't go shopping in the town unless I'm in a wheelchair. Despite this I'm optimistic about the future and my forthcoming TKR on one knee is looming. I had to give up my job 2 years ago and make some real changes to how I live and manage home life.

Both knees are bent and I walk awkwardly even with the aid of crutches or my stick. Discomfort is part of my life now. I certainly don't want to continue like this forever!!! Hopefully the operations will give me a better quality of mobility. I hope so - I long to do things that I haven't been able to do these past few years!!

I'll let you know how it goes!!!!!
