hello everyone
I have had a cough for about 8 weeks, and the gp put me on antibiotics and 10 days of oral predisoline. I managed to stop coughing but when finished with tablets the cough came back. I had a chest xray and it was clear. I was on 12.5 methotrexate and its been reduced to 10mg Can anyone tell me if lowering the dose back down to 10mg which i had been taking before and didnt have a cough then will stop me coughing, only this cough is wearing me out big time and can methotrexate cause inflammation in the sinuses.

HI - so sorry to hear that you have been having a problem with the cough.
I take MTX and have been warned about getting a cough being a problem ..... but I haven't had any of the problems that you mention so I am afraid that I can't help with your problem.
however, I do know that when I have had infections, it has helped me to reduce the dose of the drug, so I really do hope that it iwll help you to be on the lower dose. You may find that after a while your cough goes on its own ...... at least they have been checking you out so that they can't miss anything.
good luck!

Hello.
I was wondering if you are suffering from some kind of reflux from the medication you are taking.
I am prescribed Omeprozole as a stomach protector. I first started taking it when I was dx with Helicobactor Pylori, It was discovered that I had this back in 1987.
At the same time Omeprozole does help protect your stomach when taking medications of any kind.
The reflux will irritate your throat and cause coughing.
I also put myself on a dairy free diet and this in turn has helped me.
Don't know if this helps at all, but it's worth mentioning it to your gp
You can have tests to see if you have the Helicobactor Pylori also.

I forgot to mention that, if you are taking MTX in oral form then this could irritate your stomach, which in turn will cause reflux. Ask if you could go over to injections maybe. This will disperse into your system better than tablets.

Hi. I recently asked question on forum re methatrexate and coughs. I had a nasty cough and breathing issues over xmas and new year. Had antibiotics, ,inhaler and a chest x-ray, which was clear. During that time was taken off 15mgs of methatrexate, by weekly injection. All was well and had had methotrexate for 3 weeks when the cough came back, so taken off it again. Waiting for a lung scan to see what is going on, if anything. I am hoping that this is caused by a virus and not any inflammation. I have a fab rhuemy tearm and spoke direct with the consultant who is arranging this for me.0

Hi Sue,
I'm on 10mg Mtx and sometimes get a bit of a tickly cough but only a couple of bouts a day so it's only a minor irritation.
Have you tried phoning your Rheumy nurse to see what she thinks ......sometimes they can advise better than a GP?
