Dear Sharmaine,
Just wanted to give you a big send off for your operation next Monday. Only a week to go.
You already have lots of information about the op and do not hesitate to ask questions of the hospital staff should you be unclear on anything. Use the "nurse" buzzer by your bed, that it what it is there for, and ask for pain relief should you be in discomfort.
I truly wish you well, Sharmaine. You sound a very positive, methodical type of person so will "get on" with it and make a good recovery.
Think, this time next week, you will have one straight leg.
Do call in this week with any last minute questions or just to say hello and I look forward to seeing your name on here again as soon as you feel able and please let us know how you are going on.
Lots of love and hugs

Hi Sharmaine,
Good luck and I really hope it goes well for you. Luv Cris x0 -
Hi Elna
Thanks for starting this thread. I'm keeping well away from public places as much as I can to avoid colds, coughs etc. I have to go to the hospital for my last blood test tomorrow then I'm going to confine myself to home! My MIL had a real nasty cough and streamer of a cold last week when we went out to celebrate my FIL's birthday. I stayed well away from her and fingers crossed I won't get it.
I appreciate all the advice which has helped me to prepare for Monday. It will be nice to have a straight leg after all these years!
I hope you are well Elna.
Thanks everyone.elnafinn wrote:Dear Sharmaine,

Dear Sharmaine
Have you had your blood tests done now? I was lucky enough to have them done at my pre op assessment.
I bet you are counting down the days now

Hi Elna
I'm off to the hospital to have the final blood test in an hour's time. This one is for my blood group/type had to be done at least 7 days before operation. I had one last week at the pre op which was for something else (renal??).
I am counting the days ...after such a long time - I can't believe it's finally here. My leg is very swollen today - well more than normal so I'm going to have to rest it.
I'm keeping myself occupied with bits and pieces. OH got a small suitcase down - I hope it fits all my stuff!
Are you sleeping any better? How is your mobility?
Do take care.

Dear Sharmaine,
11 days on and mobility is good thank you considering it is early days. It does ache though intermittently and evenings and nights are by far the worst. Last night was a night from hell and back. I thought I was giving birth from my knee at times, the pain was so awful. The leg suddenly jerks and the whole leg aches periodically too, at night. I used 2 ice packs last night. For me they are a godsend.
Now all is ok and I just have a slight murmur every now and again.
My grand daughter and her mum are calling in this afternoon so that will be a breath of fresh air. They will stay around 2.5 hours.
I will do my exercises for the second time now and some of them are not a breeze but needs must.
This night pain was similar last time so that is how it is for me. It does not mean that you will suffer in the same way at all. We are all different. I just kind of hoped that perhaps second time around the pain would not be so bad ........ if the knee turns out like the other one, then I shall be more than pleased to put up with as much pain as it wishes to give me. I am sure we will become friends, we are working on that at the moment.

Hi Elna
Sorry to hear that your sleep has been disturbed by your new knee. What ice packs are you using? Do you take amytriptiline? You may need something else to help you sleep....could you 'phone your GP? 11 days already! It must take time for the muscles, nerves, tissues, blood vessels (and whatever else is in there) to get used to your new joint.
I'll let you know how I am when I return home. Apparently they don't let you out of hospital until you can bend your knee 90 degrees and walk upstairs.
I hope you manage an unbroken night's sleep very soon. How was the visit with your grand daughter? My MIL telephoned to say that she'll be visiting me in hospital next Thursday.
OH has set up the wireless network so I can use the computer in the dining room. When I'm up in the early hours I can post lots on the forum.
Like you I've only got myself to worry about. OH is going to work from home as much as possible for 2/3 weeks. It's a good job he's banished himself to the spare room. If I'm up in the early hours I can read/watch tv without disturbing him. Mind you he's such a light sleeper he'll hear everything. I tend to use frozen peas as my ice pack - any other suggestions??
Have you had your first physiotherapy session yet?
Take care now and don't overdo those exercises!

[Hi Toni
Thank you. I won't say I'm looking forward to the actual stay in hospital or the TKR op but we have to go through these rough times occasionally. It will be lovely to have one pain free leg that is straight and not bent!

Hi Joy
I am a patient type of person - I've got through the discomfort of walking around for the past 3 years with a totally bent and swollen knee..... I'm prepared mentally to deal with the settling in period of my new knee.
I live in hope that when they're both fixed I'll be able to skip along the sea shore!

Hi bertyboy, chris kath and lynn
Thanks for your kind words and best wishes.
I've been busy sorting out things to take to hospital today. Leg too painful today to even attempt any housework. I've been on the forum a lot. I expect people are fed up with my posts.

Dear Sharmaine
Have sent you a little pm. Grand daughter was as lovely, loving, full of fun, chatter and laughter as usual I was worn out though when she left with her mum, but then I usually am.

Hi Elna
Thanks for the pm. I'm glad you had a lovely, if tiring, day with your grand daughter - she sounds gorgeous. My younger sister has one grandchild and another on the way..I'm slightly envious. My son says I have to wait another 2-3 years! By then I sould have 2 new knees and will have the strength to help out.

Hello Sharmaine
Just want to add my best wishes for your big day next week - I was exactly the same before my op worrying about catching a cold or something, my son got sick of me spraying Dettol everywhere & telling everyone to wash their hands!!
Try to keep your mind busy the next couple of days as if nothing is happening next week - but can I recommend you pack some earplugs to help you get some sleep in the ward. I so wished I had them as can be bit noisy sometimes!
Will be looking out for your return - lots of new knee people at mo to compare notes etc
Once again - all the best, hon
love Pennie X0 -
Hi Pennie
I've got to nip out to buy a few bits and the ear plugs are a great idea - I'll put them on my list. I bought some Strepsils to suck on everytime I go outdoors. OH is taking me out on Saturday for a meal - it's nice to have something to look forward to. It's my birthday on 23 February and OH says I can buy some clothes. I think he's trying to keep my mind off things.
Have you had a TKR as well? I'm sure Monday will arrive too quickly. We have to be at the hospital for 7.00am - I'm not sure what time my operation will be ...sometime in the morning - at my pre op they were pretty vague and muttered something about 7.45am.
Thanks for your kind words which are much appreciated.
How are you?

Hi Sharmaine
I did a spot of ironing this afternoon, how is that for encouragement aye? Whilst doing that I remembered that my consultant mentioned that about day 3 post op I may feel a little down but it was only a blip and would not last and it was the General Anaesthetic working its way out. So, if you have a GA, this is something worth remembering. It did not happen to me either times but I was grateful to be forewarned in case it had.
I hope your shopping expedition went well.

Hi Elna
I popped into the village chemist ... they know me and helped me with my little shop - tissues; earplugs; soap; cosmetic bag etc. OH is taking me out for a little shopping expedition tomorrow. I fancy getting a new top - you can never have enough of those! We're going for a nice curry at Kuti's (not sure of the spelling) in the village about 5 miles away. Looking forward to it. Only 3 more big sleeps until my op.
I hope OH remembers to record Eastenders for me as I need to know who murdered Archie (it's the only soap I watch). How long were you in hospital - I hope I'm home by the weekend.
Glad you managed a bit of ironing you must be feeling better. How are you feeling generally? Are you finding it easier now to get about? How's the swelling?
I'm sure you won't overdo things. Take care.

Hi Sharmaine
I was in 5 nights and came out in the evening so all I had to do was go to bed!!
The swelling is not too bad thank you and I am finding it much easier to get about.Just have the little blip with the top of the wound where it looks angry. I am watching and talking to it nicely. Since Wednesday I have not used any walking aid. I also walked to the shed at the bottom of the garden and back with no walking aid. It is on the flat, I hasten to add. When I go for a short walk, which may be this afternoon or tomorrow I will take one crutch for reassurance. When I say a walk, I do mean a SHORT walk!!
I cannot believe that it is 2 weeks in about 45 minutes that I went to theatre.
