I posted a while back about splints, difficulty of getting them from physio/ot etc. Saw my consultant today and he asked me if I was using them and then told me the nurse would give them to me. Got them straight away. Unbelievable that physio wouldn't let me have any!

Now I've got to customize them - got some great ideas from all of you - watch this space!

Hey, Sally ... will you be going to the Dragon's Den for funding then?

Thanks rita. I wore them last night as suggested and can't believe the difference they have made. I don't understand why it is so difficult sometimes to get just the basic things you need to make life easier - have been managing without them for months as my physio said they didn't agree with people having them. I am angry that I have been struggling so much with my hands :(

Hi Sally, if it is any help, I found my Occupational therapy dept. very very good. If you haven't already had a referral ask you consultant if he could arrange for you. I am sure you would benefit a lot from speaking to the o/t staff, my lot were so supportive couldn't give me enough! The splints are great, I use mine when carrying anything that is a little weighty.or when I have a mini flare up.
Hope this is of help to you

Thanks Cassie. I am having a home visit tomorrow morning but not sure really what to expect. I could ask her or could get a referral at my next consultant's appt.

I would just add a warning that if you find the splints at all uncomfortable, contact your rheumy nurse and tell them, and maybe ask to be seen by a hand specialist (or OT).

I have had a custom-made splint done by an OT today, and she pointed out several things with my hand & wrist that meant that I had been doing more harm than good by wearing the 'off the shelf' model of splint which a physio had previously given me. My wrists/hands had obviously changed over time.

Hope you get relief using your splints.

    hugs

Thanks Wonky, I will bear that in mind. I had no idea there was so much to think about with splints.
