Bloody NHS
was given an appointment for physio assessment on my hip (OA and deformed)
It was for last thursday. Unfortunatly we were given the Ofsted call and i had to cancel my appointment. The rude receptionist said " becuse i hadnt given 48 hours notice she would cancel my appointment and send me back to my gp" i have been waiting since july!!!! Plus i didnt know i had to give 48 hours notice, i called them as soon as i could. In the end, when i calmed down i emailed a complaint to the local NHS authority. No word of a lie, she called me back within an hour and after that she had me an appointment for tuesday. I am quite glad i complained!!:mrgreen:

So i now have the appointment tomorrow.
Any ideas what will be happening? It is a clinical assessment for physio.

Any info will help

Many thanks

Gemma

    Hi Gemma,

Good for you sending the email and getting something done :D

The physio will probably take your medical history (they usually do even though it's on file :| ) and then examine the amount of movement in your joint by getting you to move your leg independently. They normally test the strength of your muscles by getting you to push you leg against their hands in certain positions.

Either during this session or the next one they will give your a series of exercises to do and watch you whilst you do them, equip you with a sheet with your exercises written down with diagrams and send you away to do them at home.

After a set period they will reassess you, do all the measurements again and see if you feel the exercises have benefitted you.

I can't stress too much how important it is to do these exercises, just set aside half an hour a day to do them and make them part of your daily routine like brushing your teeth. :D Exercises have taken alot of my pain away because it increases your muscle strength - it's as important as popping pills, I feel. Lecture over now.

    Hope this helps.

    hi
well it didnt go too well yesterday

he said he didnt understand why i was sent for physio!!!

but he did take a look at the report from the MRI scan i had on my hip.

They are concerened about the deteriation from july's x-rays and want some more done. They are also concerened about the blood flow to the bones. If they are correct in their concerns this will mean a full hip replacement very soon!
Not too happy about this as i thought it would be my decision when this was done, when i couldnt take the pain any more!!

    Hi Gemma,

Thanks for letting us know how it went, albeit not very well

I think the blood flow issue is very different to arthritis damage and that could be why they'll be 'strongly advising' you to have it done ......but ultimately the decision will be yours in the end, they cannot force you into having anything done. You must be guided by them and find out the consquences if you don't want the op.

It sounds as though he hasn't given you any exercises to do at all ....is that right?

    Hi Gemma

I am sorry that the physio appt did not go as you perhaps thought. It would seem in the circumstances it would have been most unwise for you to have been given any exercises.

It will always be your decision as to whether you have any surgery or not. No one can make you sign on the dotted line. The medics can only lay the facts in front of you and give you their opinion but it is up to you to make that final decision. You do have some breathing space at the moment because more tests need to be done.

got to be honest some pysio's are better than others, the first i saw was fab, gave me all the excercises and incresed my mobility, nhs are only allowed to give you so much then you're discharged, 3 years later mobility had decreased further and i asked, through occ health for a new referral, first they lost it (despite me handig it in person and in uniform) then cos i'm staff i saw a senior, well apart from introducing the tens - which i then went and bought; he was useless, gave me one excercise, didnt monitor my progress, left me frequently to go and supervise others, just as well i have my own sense and looked stuff up :(

    Hi Gemma,
I know what you mean about putting off the op for as long as possible -I did that too, I am now more than ready for it and of course have to join the waiting list ... by the time you have seen the consultant again and gone on the list ... time will have passed and you will be nearer to really needing it.
I agree with the post re some physios being better than others. Some are genuinely interested and others are just disinterested and going through the motions. Ask for another referral after seeing the consultant again and hopefully you'll get a different one!

    Good luck,
    Speedalong.

PS Take a peep at the recovering from hip replacement thread - it's very heartening!
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.
