Hi guys

I know i dont get online often and I feel that i dont really have much right in asking for advice but here goes.

As you can see im asking about methotrexate, Ive been put on it im on the 10mg dose and took my first one last thursday, unlike some of the storys ive read I think i came off ok, i felt sick, and like i had a migrain for 3 days oh and i slept for england!!!lol .

My gp didnt really tell me much just about blood test, not to get pregnant, and if i get a sore throat go see him  , can u guys tell me any more?, my consultant didnt even tell me i was going on this, just told me he'd put me on new meds and to go see my gp and he'd give me a perscription, handy eh!!, my 4 tablets came in a bottle with no paperwork, so there you go thats the extent of my knowledge of metho".

It would be great if anyone can give thelow down, or a site that can give some "english" low down!!, thanks guys.

Keep well all, and Suziev if you read this, i hope your ok, and i promise the snail post is on its way!

    HI Vikki

it is good to see you posting .... and anyone is welcome to post - you don't need to apologise for asking a question!!!

It is really scary starting a new med and you are doing the right thing looking for as much info as possible, but be careful not to get too hung up on the side effects as the long lists don't happen to everyone .... and the only way to see is to try it out!!!

I presume that you have looked at the info on this site already.

I am surprised that your consultant didn't give you a leaflet about MTX. You can read one here (which is the same leaflet that my consultant gave me)
    http://www.arc.org.uk/arthinfo/patpubs/6247/6247.asp
or ask ARC to send you a copy.

another good site for info is the NRAS & I found this on their site
    http://www.nras.org.uk/about_rheumatoid_arthritis/newly_diagnosed/which_drugs_are_used/methotrexate_in_rheumatoid_arthritis.aspx

    hope they help!

you could also try ringing the AC helpline as they have a lot of info too.

    good luck!

A good website for all your medicines is the medicine guide the website is
    http://www.medguides.medicines.org.uk/
I use this site whenever I get a new medicine and find it helpful.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for that, its been a great help, just one more question for those of you who have been on Methotrexate, is there a better time to take it?, with or without food?.
Well thats about all for now, thanks again.

I always used to take it after breakfast, but I know others on here have been advised to take it at night to avoid the nausea, and others swear by scrambled eggs before taking their MTX

I think it is what works for each individual, and you sort of find out yourself .... I don't think there is an official recommendation that it is taken with food.

hope you find what works for you.

Hi there! I feel that the day and time of taking metho is a very individual thing and sometimes only arrived at by trial and error.

I chose to take mine on a Sunday evening, but when I got a serious chest infection a few weeks ago was told NOT to take it and to miss that dose...........the very next day I was told I could take the missed dose and then found that in fact Monday lunchtimes suits me better! I do take mine after food, but I can't find anything in the info to say that it matters one way or the other.

I'm currently on 22.5 weekly and reach the max 25mg next week. I seem to have got off lightly as I have had minimal side effects.

Hi - i take mine after a big meal on friday evenings so that most of the side effects are gone by the morning! You can have anti sickness tablets, which you can take day or so before your choosen day, which do help. Its trial and error for the first few weeks, but worth it in the end??!!

Let us know how it goes for you.
