Hello all,
Have found out that my ankle problems are Osteo-Arthritis.As i am seeing surgeon( who did my hip replacement)on Mon 15th the nurse suggested I talk to him as he will be able to enlighten me.

I dont know what to think as I have R.A and dont know much about OA.
Anyone got a little bit of info for me?
Best wishes
Elizabeth

    Hi Elizabeth

Sorry you got an extra diagnosis :( . I think a lot of people on this forum can have both though.

Just offering my support to you and hope the ortho explains it all to you.

    Love

    Dear Elizabeth

I am so sorry to hear that you have now been diagnosed with oa of the ankle. Have you ever injured your ankle at any time because oa can set in much later because of an injury. What symptoms have you got, besides pain of course? Does your ankle swell? I really do feel so sorry for you. At least you do not have long to wait to see your consultant. Hopefully he will be able to answer your questions.

Sending you over lots of love and hugs, you certainly need them.

I imagine that you are feeling a bit overwhelmed Elizabeth, with yet another diagnosis.

My first run in with Arthur - OA - was in my right ankle, about ten years ago now. I want to try to give you some re-assurance, by telling you that, in that time, it hasn`t become any worse. Hopefully, you will have the same experience. Do the circular movements whenever you`re sitting down, they do help. Put the frozen peas on, followed by some heat, if it gets overly painful.

When I was in hospital, having my TKR, I spoke to the surgeon about my ankle. He was very upfront, saying that it was a relatively new op - this was three years ago - and had a long recovery period, with NO weight bearing for months. His advice was to carry on as long as possible, before even thinking about surgery. Actually, he didn`t need to stress that, as it would be impossible for me to consider it.

I hope this helps a bit, and I will be really interested in what you are told on Monday...........Ange.

    Dear Elizabeth

I too have had problems with one foot and had an insert made for both shoes. I remember they did a plastercast of my foot and then I went to collect the inserts some time later. They most certainly helped and I no longer wear them in my shoes and have not done so for a long time. That is not exactly an ankle problem though. Are you flat footed by any chance? In that case inserts may correct your way of walking and ease the pain in your ankle..... What about an ankle support? Perhaps this may be suggested to you.

    Thinking of you my lovely,

    Love

Thankyou. You have helped me as I was feeling overwhelmed, as Ange said. Even waiting until the 15th seems a long time to wait in the dark.
I was very shocked when she told me. OA was mentioned in relation to my hip but then that was dismissed and then I was told everyone with R.A gets some OA.But I never took any notice of it really as the information didnt seem very conclusive.
My left foot has given me lots of probs lately so I am relieved to know what it is but I really wasnt expecting that.
Thankyou for all your tips and advice which is very welcome.
    Regards Elizabeth

    Hi Elna,
I dont think I am flat footed. I did have some inserts made about 3/4 years ago but they have worn away. The way I walk has definately changed and also I have put on a lot of weight so both could be issues.
    Many thanks

    Hi Elizabeth

Sorry to hear this news. I hope you get some answers from the surgeon on the 15th.

I have OA in my left foot - and bone spurs in my big toe. I've had spells where it has been quite painful, then it seems to fade for ages. Maybe your ankle will be the same - I don't know much about OA myself. I know that the orthotics I was given helped my foot - perhaps they might be able to offer something like that which will help. I hope so.

    Take care,
    love from Lynn xxx

    Hi Lynn,
I am in good company as it is my left foot too. The pain comes and goes for me too and it is incredibly painful at times, especially weight bearing(obviously) but also when trying to sleep. It is difficult to get a comfortable spot where your ankle can rest,Not sure what orthotics is yet but I am sure I will find out soon!
    Regards

    Hello Ange
Thankyou for taking the time to answer.
I really appreciate your advice.I know we are all different but I havent a clue what to expect and what the future holds.I am pleased to read that it doesnt have to get worse.I know that surgery is very difficult and a last resort. My first thought was I will need surgery eventually but pleased to see that is not the only outcome.
The exersise will help, thankyou, and the hot and cold to help with the pain. I am grateful for any advice at this point as the pain can be very bad as you probably know.
    Many thanks,
    Elizabeth

Thankyou Toni for your support. It is very welcome.I hope it will be explained to me as I know nothing about OA.I am seeing him about my hip replacement and how my unoperated hip is doing so it will be a busy appointment.
My best wishes to you & Daisy the cat(she cant be a kitten anymore)

    Hello Elna again,
I dont remember ever injuring my ankle even in the days of my gymnastics. The ankle was swollen at the back before Christmas but now the swelling seems to have subsided and now the pain is round the front and from ankle to ankle. It hurts to move it and stairs can be very painful at times.
    Regards
