Deep and meaningful conversations

Hi
According to a report in the journal Psychological Science, indulging in chit-chat and small talk can make you miserable. Happiness is more likely to be found among those whose discussions are deep and meaningful. Scientists believe a person's wellbeing is directly related to the incidence of profound discussions they have.
I'm not sure what to think about this. There is a time and a place for both sorts of conversations, and I'm not likely to stand at the bus stop discussing the meaning of life with anybody who happens to be there. On the other hand, I might well talk about the weather, and how often the bus has been on time recently. At least I would be communicating, and not just standing in silence :!: ( I'm not known for my ability to stand in silence!)
I don't think the chit-chat we have on here is making us all miserable, is it :?: But we do have some deep and meaningful conversations as well every now and again.
Joan ( being very profound :!:  )

Hi Joan
It dont make me miserable chatting on here. The only thing that makes me miserable is all my aches and pains. Woke up this morning with a swollen left and arm and wrist
What's THAT all about!!!
How are you today anyway?0 -
Hi quietwaters
Sorry to hear about your arm and wrist, and I hope the pain will subside soon. I'm fine today, thank you, although I was very achy all day yesterday.0 -
Now I'm trying to think of something deep and meaningful to discuss :!:0
-
Glad youre feeling better today, it's great to have a good day free from pain, well, almost free from pain.
I wouldn't mind, but I dont get arthur in my arms, wrists etc, only hips and knees, so dont know what's caused it, weird!
hopefully it will be back to normal tomorrow.0 -
PAIN :!: We couldn't get more deep and meaningful than that :!:
A very good consultant I met told me that doctors get immune to the word because they hear it so often, and many have no concept of what it actually means to live with pain. He thought that there should be a way of making them all experience pain on a regular basis so that they would be more sympathetic.0 -
I like the idea of that, especially for the consultant who examined me on Monday, he twisted my hip till it crunched, then said, ooooh that didnt sound very good did it???!!!!! Its hurt me even more since :roll:0

I remember a docter writing on a form that i had mild pain :x and i had never seen this docter. Wouldn't mind seeing him in "mild pain"

It's difficult to convey to someone else exactly what a pain feels like, and the severity of it, especially if they are lucky enough never to feel much in the way of pain themselves.0

I really don't believe that. I think they know truly what some patients are going through, and also, realise that some of us have different pain levels than others. Take my OH for instance. When he fell to the bottom of HMS Warrior in Portsmouth some years back. From a very great height, lost footing on highly polished steps and rope catapulted him to the absolute bottom of the boat.
The ambulance men were amazed that he could get up and walk back up especially as he had a broken collarbone, twisted ankle and dislocared fingers. He has a very high pain barrier.
My dr has Polymyalgeria Rheumatica like me and that is extremely painful at times and even when it is under control, causes pain whilst exercising and walking. We are often comparing our problems with each other. It's quite amusing to hear us.
I think I can honesty say that every dr or consultant I have met has been fully aware of the level of pain experienced by myself at any given time.
There, I have had a long and meaningful conversation with you and now, I have a headache. So it hasn't exactly made me feel like jumping up and down with glee.
Have a good evening |Joan. Going to have a lovely sunset tonight. Now that makes me happy.0 -
I agree entirely with Joan, some of the doctors I have encountered have absolutely no conception of pain - and certainly not mine!
Any doctor who pats me on the hand and says 'There, there, have an aspirin' when I tell him I have severe head pain needs a swift hammer to the top of his head!

It seems you have just been very unlucky.
I must admit, my GP doesn't suffer fools gladly, and I have had people turn to me and say they wouldn't have him as their dr, but I always seem to have got on alright with him. As soon as he knows there is definitely something wrong with you he does try to do his best for you.
I think Gynae Consultants are the worst.
I've had bad experiences with one or two and one was because I couldn't understand what he was saying. Just very bad English

The most insensitive consultant I ever saw was a surgeon. He said that he could operate on me, and then said ''Yes? No?'' as though he were offering me a bag of sweets, with no time to consider my options.
I nearly said that I could offer him an operation on one part of his anatomy. ''Yes? No?''0
