I think a general mouth wash is reasonably effective.I did read something about cancer patients being given a new and effective mouthwash so will look through my recent arthritis mags to see if I can track it down.

    Hi John

That is annoying and unpleasant. Are we talking four or five or many more?? Individual ones can be treated easier - the mouthwash would be better though if there are loads.

Hope you are feeling not too bad otherwise??

you might need to talk to your rheumy nurse cos they may want to reduce your dose - they stop my MTX if I get mouth ulcers, and that is why they reduced my dose and added in the leflunomide.

Their reasoning is that if we take the MTX when we have a mouth ulcer then our immune system has to work twice as hard to heal it and it can get worse rather than better.

My dentist suggested the Corsodyl Mouth wash for when I got really bad ulcers, but not for continuous use cos it colours your teeth, but they do a daily version now and I find that it seems to keep things at bay (all fingers crossed as I type this :lol: ) but as you are on MTX DON'T use the Corsodyl toothpaste because it has echanacia in it and that is not recommended in conjunction with MTX.

    good luck!

I'm slightly concerned about what you are saying about mtx and mouth ulcers as I am on the lowest dose 7.5 mgs. My rheumy made a note of it that that's it. Am coming down with a cold now and wonder whether I should stop mtx til better.......?

sorry sally didn't want to worry anyone

It is always a bit confusing on this issue as different rheumy teams seem to say different things :? :? which isnt' that helpful when we are all in different places and being told different things

I can only say what is told to me by my team, and that is that if I get a mouth ulcer and still have it at the time I should have the next dose then I am to miss that dose. If I have an infection I am told to miss the MTX until the infection has gone, and if I am on antibiotics then I am also told to miss the MTX.

I know others on here are given different advice so I would suggest you ring your rheumy nurse and ask their policy on this.

sorry again if I worried you

    Hi John
I found the article but it relates to cancer sufferers who cant swallow and have ulcers in the neck and mouth. It is a bit too strong for us.

hi Wonky, they didn't tell me any of this when i started. It was only when I got a chest infection and ended up in A&E did I find out about missing a dose! My rheumy made a note of mouth ulcers and said if I got more chest infections they will have consider changing my meds.

It's useful to have information on here and I can watch out for it now. So thanks for that. xx

Very occasionally I get moth ulcers due to medication and my consultant prescriped soluable steriod tabs which when dissolved you twish round the mouth but do not swallow. Does the trick.

    Hi
When i get a flare up I always get mouth ulcers I tend to get a few all in the same area which end up joining together and forming a big massive one which often prevents me from opneing my mouth adn makes it difficult to eat.
My gp is fab and he prescribed a paste called ADCORTYL in ORABASE for MOUTH ULCERS.
It is absolutely fab and eases it straight away and kind of dries it out. It is fab and which I knew about it sooner.
