Hi Gemma
Hadnt heard of it so I googled it
sounds really painful. I used the wikepedia ( am I allowed to say that?) link as it's usually factual and no biased.
Hope they can help you.

Hello, Welcome to the site. I'm sorry, but I have't had it, although, I've just had a quick google and it sounds like tha pain I get from my oa in hip/back. Why not try phoning the helpline team number at the top of the page. They may be able to help you and are very good.

Hi Gemma
I have Avascular Necrosis in my hips, have done for quite a few years now. From my knowledge of it it is where the blood supply to the hip joint is cut off somehow resulting in the bone dying and loss of cartilage, making it bone on bone.
It basically made my hips extremely stiff and painful to move, if I walk too much it can get so bad that the joint actually "locks up" and I can't move it, sometimes for days and the same applies when I sit for long periods of time, it was excruciating and I usually ended up in tears.
Unfortunately mine was a late diagnosis (I put the pain down to my RA) and it progressed so much there weren't many options left for me. I have recently had a total hip replacement in my left hip and am currently waiting for the other to be done.
Good luck with your appointment with orthopaedics and I hope they can do something to help you. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to email me.
Much love.

thank you so much so your reply
i was beginning to think i was on my own, i too thought it was RA pain in my hip. i was sent for x-rays last july and they made me go in a wheel chair because they thought the hip was broken, it is not the round normal shape and it is too short.
I have since had an MRI and was sent for pysio, he said that i didnt need it but read the mri report which said they thought it was avascular necrosis. hope i get somewhere next week as i am in so much pain at the moment
mine "locks" up and feels a bit like it is dislocating, but thinking about it i could never quite put my finger on what it really felt like, i think it possibly is locking up not dislocating!
thanks, hope you are ok at the moment

I have Avascular Necrosis! Have never come across anyone else who had it so this is a first!!
I was diagnosed 17 years ago when I was 26 - the hip had worn away by this time and kept wanting to 'dislocate' so I had a TRH replacement - this was repaired last year but now the left hip has done the same and I totally recognise the 'locking up' you both describe - the left hip is being replaced in August.
As I said this is the first time I have heard from anyone who has this too, I feel quite emotional as you start to think you are alone.....0 -
can we start a gang then!! there are three of us now.
i have heard that there are other alternatives to THR but will await the appointment on thursday
am very nervous, had to have blood test for diabetes today as well

A gang of three!!LOL!
I would be interested to know what alternatives to a thr they advise you there are, mine was so worn away that there were no alternatives so perhaps they have caught yours good and early...As I said I was only 26 when I had my first hip replacement ahving suffered years of pain before that but I never let it stop me and have lead a reasonably noraml life - obviously parchute jumps and the like are out and I have to plan carefully any trips out so that I don't have to walk too far but I manage the gym everyday and rode my bike everywhere up until my hip repair last year - don't get me wrong I have times of great pain and frustration and sometimes I think 'why me' but it could have been worse so try not to let it get you down too much!!
Best wishes for Thursday

thanks
i too go to the gym 3 times a week and interstingly it has only been since i have lost weight that the pain has come.
I used to just sit on my bum but now love walking and doing lots of activities.
i have been feeling the "why me" stuff as sometimes the pain is unbearable, and when it really locks or dislocates i sometimes turn the air blue!!! it has also started to freeze (this has only been in the last day or so)
all good fun as they say, im glad i changed my attitude to life before all of this. I would have used this as an excuse not to do anything but now i plan my days (or try to) and still love doing all activites. Not gonna be doing parachuting either, rowing and walking are fine for me.
