Whats happening to the NHS

Two weeks ago GP sent me to see the nurse to have some lung function tests done due to having repeated chest infections. Nurse could not do the tests because the cable/lead for the machine had gone missing but she had ordered a new one and gave me an appointment for today. Got up very early so I could get the old bones moving and arrived ten minutes before my appointment time. Waited 20 minutes and was called, after sitting in her room for another 10 minutes while she sets up the machine, she discovers the new cable/lead doesnt fit the machine. She goes and talks to the girls in reception and comes back and tells me she will order another one and phone me when it comes in. She was quite annoyed that she had phoned several people to come in for these tests and now she would have to phone them back and cancel. Now maybe its just me, but surely she should have checked the cable/lead when it arrived to make sure it was the right one and not leave it to the day she is going to use the machine. Am I being unreasonable or do you agree that someone needs there backside kicked.

    Hi Patricia

Totally agree. This abominable situation needs to be addressed. You would probably feel better if you had a rant to someone as well. I would have been livid. Go one step further than a telephone call as these just get forgotten about once the phone has been put down. A letter would be a good idea, requesting the courtesy of a reply.

The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

If you can lay down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone's day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day.

    Hello Pat

I would have been very upset (putting is mildly) All that time you hve waited.

For one who has just made a stupid mistake with her drs appt, I can hardly talk, but put my phoopa down to age.

There use to be a time when I would have been sensible and worked things through as you said. Yes it would have made sense to make sure she had everything working. They don't know how to plan these days.

    Hi guys

Maybe she didn't have time to check if it was the right lead? Or could the company sent the wrong one? Ease up she's only human!

    Hi Patricia.

I am due to have a lung function test on Thursday and hope this time it goes according to plan. I had one done in June, and I had the same problem as you, in my case the nurse/technician had travelled from a hospital 2 hours away to our local cottage hospital to do the test and she didnt have the right lead. Why do they not check these things!!!!!grrrr. Then when it was done, they lost the results!!!!!!!!.

Totally agree what a waste of time and money yours & theirs. Sometimes common sense isn't a strong point for some people.

I think that staff have so much to do and too many targets to hit that they don't have time to think about patients.
I know several people who work within the NHS and the targets they have to reach are very stressful. the government need to let them do their jobs - which is to care for people before putting moeny and targets first.

Sorry that you have had a wasted time, on more than one occasion.
I agree with others, the meeting of targets and bench marks has taken priority over patient care. I was retired from nursing after 26 years, due to ill health. Things were getting bad then, some 9 years ago, with more forms, budgeting, appraisals, etc etc etc, never mind the patients on my ward. That was not what I was trained to do, I was trained, oh so many moons ago, when patient care was pramount, Matron was God and Sister was always right. Things ran like clockwork and all the patients had equal high standards of care and attention at all times. The hospitals were spotless and we were proud of our wards and our standards of care.
someone stop me, or I will go on all night.
