I wonder who knows of what aids are availiable on prescription .. i found out today that you can get a stockings aid, something to help you put on stockings and tights .. rather than struggle, i do not use thight, socks and find the way i have been coping is to do without and change the way i dress....

i have never asked for help with items, and nothing has ever been offered, i have bought my own .. but it is not always possible ...

( i think it a case of what you don't know !) ... there may be things of use to me .. like button fastners stocking aids ... back supports knee supports , item like kitchen utensils to make lie easier, anything, does anyone know exactly what you an ask you GP for ...

    Hi

I am not sure what if anything you can get on prescription, I do know that if you ask your GP or Rhumey to have a VISIT FROM OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH They will assess your nedds for things.
Also if you purchase anything from a disability shop you will be exempt from VAT as a disable person so that can save some money.
    Hope this helps

    Hi Jen,

My experience is the same as Venita's and I reckon you have to be referred for an OT assessment and they will supply you with aids after they've assessed your needs.

    Hi Jen,

Yep....OT are the ones you need to contact. In some areas you can self refer for an OT assessment via Social work...in other areas via the GP.

I had an OT assessment recently and they supplied various aids to help me around the house and some adaptations (rails, raised toilet seat/ frame, walk in shower). They have also written to my housing provider to ask them to change all the electrical sockets (too stiff for me to plug in & switch on) and to change the front door (very difficult to access)

..It really all depends on your individual needs.

hope you get to see an OT soon. Iris x

I'm sure it was this forum that we had a thread going {long tiome ago} something along the lines of "What aids do youn have and what do you find most useful" There are a lot of aids that people don t realise are available...I've a feeling the mods deleted it because of sites we had put in...Could be wrong it might have been another arthritis forum

Apart from the splints, another thing I got from OT is a bed rail. Half of it goes under the matress and then the raised bit acts like a small side for the bed, about the length of a pillow. It's wonderful, I use every time I'm in bed it to pull myself over / turn and push on it to help me sit up. I'd ask your GP for a referral to the OT, they'll come out to your house. They did say I could have a stair rail instead of my own bannister but I can manage at the moment.
