Hi everyone

Am in the middle of a really bad flare at the moment, MTX did not work for me and am now on Plaquenil which is not working either...pain is chronic and relentless. Always seems to worse at night ...so today GP has prescribed me 10mg of amitriptyline to help me sleep. Already on Diclofenac and co-codomol. Is anyone else on this and if so, any side effects and did it work immediately or indeed at all! Rheumy appt is not until the 31st March just trying to get through until then.

Thank you all

Barbara

    Hi Barbara

I am on 40mgs of Nortriptyline of a night amongst others, which is of the same family. It helps with the head pains i get, they used to be really bad but have settled a bit, they do help you sleep, i get about 2/3 hours then wake, but i do not sleep very well any way. I do not get any side affects myself, just the dry mouth, but i think thats with the other tabs as well, they told me it would take about two weeks to get into my system.

    Take care

    Monica :)

Hi, I have been on amitriptyline for some months and yes, it works very well for me. You should feel the benefit from night one. Do hope you find it helpful too. As far as I am aware there are no side effects. Just keep taking the pills.

    Hi

Sorry the meds aren't doing the job for you :( Not good at all and lack of sleep makes it so much harder to bear.

I am on 25mg amitrip at night and it dOES help - at least I can sleep and then everything else is so much better even if you ARE in pain.

    You take care

    Love

    Hi Barbara

Yes, I take amitriptyline. Mainly I take 2 at night but if I have a flare I take 3. Side effects: Dry mouth. I normally take mine 2 hours before bed. The first time I took amitriptyline I slept through until 11.50 am the next day! They are a powerful relaxant and can make you feel lethargic in the morning other than that I haven't had any side effects except for maybe the odd strange dream!!!

I hope you find taking it helpful because there's nothing worse than being in pain and not getting a good night's sleep.

    Hiya
I took amitrip between 10-20mgs per night for ten years. It does work! I only stopped because I became pregnant. Only side effects were - if you have a glass of plonk it can make you feel very drunk quickly. Plus I found that I had withdrawal symptoms after stopping it but I had been taking it for a long time and I just suddenly stopped it.

I miss it as I haven't slept properly since stopping it!

Hi I have been prescribed Amitriptline 75mg per night, but for Neuropathy, I was told they could take up to 8 weeks to start to work, I did notice a difference in the pain by week 6. But sleepwise they worked straight away......uninterupted sleep. I also take Lyrica and Tramadol for the pain. Was told that I could be put on up to 225mg..............Id be comatosed if went up to that dosage. Susan

Hi I have 20mgs of Amatriptyline at night for pain and sleep, well, the pain stops me sleeping! I find that I tend to wake between 4am and 5am. Sometimes, I go straight back to sleep, if I wake earlier, and have paracetamol for the pain, but if I wake at 4am, I find it hard, as out alarm goes off at 6am, and I lie awake waiting for it! :)

It may be you will need to increase the dose after a week or two, thats what I did, the doc said it makes you less sleepy that way. I had daytime sleepiness for the first week and thought I'd have to give up, but the second week I gradually became fine. Again the doc said thats normal.
