    Oh Val ,

so sorry you're having sore hands too. :(

...even when I don't have swelling my hands are so stiff and sore...it's arther at his best (or worst)

night splints might make it a bit easier for you...they will keep your hands in the right shape while you sleep.

    might be worth asking about?

    Hello

My wrists and hand are my worst place for Arthur. I had a flare up last week, swollen wrists and fingers. Painkillers and splints to get you through - and rest them. It does pass after a while so you should be feeling a bit better soon :) xx

    Hi Val,

I think you need to ask your Rheumy for referral to an OT so that you can be fitted with night splints or paddles. These come down under your lower arm and the palms of your hands to your fingers and are fitted with velcro. They should be made especially for you to rest your hands at night in a good position and stop them 'clawing'. I found mine a Godsend but did take a little to get used to them.

    Hope this helps.

    Luv Legs :)

Sorry to hear your having trouble with your hands. I have OA and often wake up with very painful swollen hands, especially on my wedding ring finger, my rings are so tight in the mornings.

The swelling usually goes down a little but the stiffness and weakness is there all day. Sorry I cant help with anything to ease the pains, I only do gentle stretches myself but they don't really help much :(

Hope it eases for you soon.

you'd best be off to the OT girl - who else is going to pay us for all the work we do in the caff :?:

Serioulsy though - I am with the others some splints is what you need to try.

    Good luck

Hi,Although I have no swelling in the hands at the moment, first thing in the morning the fingers are very still and painful and I can't bend my hand into a fist so trying to hold a kettle to make the first cuppa of the day is very difficult. :( The past few weeks I've also been getting a very painful wrist. It seems to start during the night and I can hardly move it because of the pain.Generally it wears off during the day. Also noticed I have an enlarged tendon in the palm of my hand, not painful but feels quite hard compared to the other hand.I've been doing hand exercises in the hope it will help with the pain but so far no improvement. Breane.

    HI Val,

so sorry that you too are struggling hand wise.
I know what that is like .... and I can say that visiting the OT has been the very best thing I could have done.

I have seen her 4 times already, and have had an assessment, had working and resting splints made for my right hand, had an assessment using kitchen items, and am going to get some extra sessions to look at other areas where my hands and arms are struggling. All this and I only expected to get a splint  :D:D

I think you know that the OT could help you, but in the meantime you might like to try the exercises that my OT gave me to do in the mornings to 'warm up' my hands/arms and get them going without pain.

Fill a bowl with warm (not too hot) water and then, using a sponge held under the water, alternate between clenching your hand round the sponge (squeezing) and opening out your hand and pushing down on the sponge. It is important to do this as SLOWLY as you can - count to 8 between having your hand closed and having it open ..... it takes a lot of effort to slow it right down, but this really helps.

    Hope that will help you
    hugs

I sympathize, I'm going through a bad hand week. The hot wheatbag, rest and be gentle with myself helps, drugs always accepted!

I just get the pain without the swelling or redness, dropped the coffee cafetiere today, thats another one I owe OH! at least it wasn't her favorite plates/vases.....

    8) Its a grin, honest!

HI, my hands can drive me crazy, they hurt and ache and the fingers and wrists swell. I've had an elasticated strap put on my watch, as the strap was digging into my wrist.

Hi Valval, sorry to hear about your painful hands.

But if it's any concilation at least I (and hopefully others) have learned from your misfortune, and the subsequent replies from the other members.

I too have very swollen, painful and immobile hands in the mornings, hearing about the splints, wheat bags and all could be very useful for me. I've never heard of either until now,(I've only very recently been diagnosed).

I'm off to hosp tomorrow for a radioactive jab and a scan so I maybe glowing in the dark tomorrow night!

This will be me ---->

    Good luck with your hands

    All the best, Kevlar

Hi my hands do that all the time, I can be sitting watching tv and they curl round and are very sore, often like that in the morning too, I asked my gp about it and he just shook his head, quite normal, will check with the consultant on my next visit.

    Hi Val,

Im so sorry to hear that you have been having trouble with your hands. I have got deformed hands and they constantly are painful. The claw like position your describing is my natural position for my right hand its a pain. My physio gave me some exercises 1 of which i couldnt do (i crnt do a prayer position).

The best advise i can give you is little but often exercises (i do 1 exercises 5/10 times).

I hope you feel better soon with your hands/wrists.

    take care x
