Hello All

Hope you are all feeling as well as can be. I have to go for a MRI scan on thursday, even though i have had them before i hate them. Apart from feeling very closed in, it's the noise, i feel as if my head is going to explode. I know they say take some music to listen to, put i cannot stand the earphones in my ears, it feels uncomfortable, in fact i do not like anything on my head full stop, as mt head feels very tender to touch, i cannot think of anything else that might help, any ideas welcome. :(

Take care everyone

Monica :)

    Hi Monica
Sorry I cant help much, I have only had one scan, and it was like a polo mint one, you just went straight through it.
I wish I could offer you more help, I am sure someone will be along soon, that can offer more advice.
I hope it all goes well for you, please let us know how you go on.
    Love

    Hi Monica,

I've never had an MRI scan but if I had to I'm sure I'd feel the same as you about being enclosed. Although I'd find listening to music a distraction.

This probably won't be much help, but have you ever tried any relaxation techniques?? I find this very useful when at the dentist or having any other unpleasant procedures carried out.

Sorry if this is not much use to you - I hope all goes well for you.

Hi, I've had an MRI scan on my neck and I agree the noise is awful, I do feel so sorry for you. The technician put ear defenders on me, but as soon as I went in, they fell off! :( At one point I felt that I needed to press the call button. I managed to hold it together, though.

I'm sorry, but I don't know what to suggest. I think what got me through, was the button in my hand, I knew I coiuld stop it at any time and so I managed to stay put. It was like a comfort blaket!

Can you mentally think of it as just a short time and then you can stop, and hopefull when you reach that time, you can set yourself perhaps a countdown, until you could stop again, also knowing if it all gets too much you can go early, you'r not trapped? Thats sort of what I did and I'm no good at things like that!

The best of Good Luck. Love Sue

    Hi Monica, tricky one!

I had an MRI on my knee. The machine was very loud. I wore hospital headphones and when they weren't giving me instructions/information they played music. Fortunately it was music I really liked! I had to do weird things with my leg and a beach ball!!! (They were investigating my patella tracking ...) All very surreal.

I think you just need to be very honest with the people doing the scanning ... you won't be the first person to have this fear and dread.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi
a few weeks ago i had mri on my whole back and knee. all in one sitting i was there for 1 hour and 30 minutes in total.
The thing I didnt like when they scanned my upper back was that they puta plastic frame over my neck. It felt weird but to be honest once you are in there you kinda relax. I actually drifted off to sleep momentarily a few times. You will be absolutely fine and if you have a problem you will have a buzzer to press and someone will be in striaght away. they give you ear plugs so the noise should be to a minimum although it is very loud banging and is uncomfrtoable on the ears, but after a few minutes you get use to it.
If i was you i'd try not to think too much about it or get worked up, it is something you have to do and think of it as a means to an end. (you could always neck a quick whiskey before you go in to calm your nerves!)

    Hi Monica

    I am a bit of a claustraphobe so I hated mine :(

I just counted the records and each one about three min so I thought there would be about 7 as it takes about 20 mins and I kept my eyees shut

    You take care

    Love

i can't say i like having MRI scans either and i ended up doing lots of deep breathing to keep me calm, maybe look up some meditation techniques, i used breath in and count to 10 and out for 10, it did help but i wasn't happy till i was out and then i brust into tears!
good luck, it's not nice but it's not bad either.

    Hi Monica,

They are horrible but they are over in 20 or so mins..... I had mine doe in 3 sections so it was 50 mins but like Toni I counted songs and well it was Scot Mills so it could have been worse for me there. I hope you will find its quicker and helpful cus then its worth it. Don't forget you can ask them to stop it and give you a rest if you get too freaked out. I will keep my fingers crossed it goes ok for you and the results will help. Take care Cris

Hi, If you feel really bad, tell them in advance and they may give you something to help you relax. Try not to worry, mine didn't feel as if it took too long.
    Take care, Love Sue
