broken glass imbedded in my hip?

Hi Everyone
I haven't written in to the forum for ages but I do pop in periodically and enjoy learning from you all about various problems.
The problem I would like to get some advice on is an unsual one so I am hoping someone has experienced it as well and can explain to me what is causing it.
I had my right hip replaced January 2009 and this is the first time I have suffered from this pain. I think it was brought on by me doing too much at an excercise class I attend to try and keep my creaking bones supple although I have been going to the class for ages.

Last night in the evening I started to get this awful sensation that I can only describe as broken glass imbedded in and around where my scar is. If anything brushed against my hip like my nightie it felt like I was being pricked by a hedgehog.
It is starting to feel a lot better now but I have know idea what caused this to happen so I would be grateful if someone could help with some
advice. :?:

That sounds agony and very scary.

I have altered sensations around my hip scars. What was the sensation like in that area (after the op but before this glass-cutting pain came?) I wonder if the nerves in the area are coming back to life?

Probably worth getting an appointment with the doc - to find out what is going on/put your mind at rest?

Also when I recently had physio, the physio explained that all the scar tissue I had on outside of my hip (my scars aren't good ones) could easily affect the muscle function of my hip ... not sure how this relates to you ... but maybe the muscles you were exercising have somehow pulled on the scar tissue area ... sorry only hypothesis.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Oooh!!

wouldn't like THAT at all :(

It may well be as simple as nerves coming back to life, but if it either doesnt go away completely very soon or comes bacmkk again I for one would take some medical advice.

Hopefully more people who have had this op will gte back to you later

    Love

    That sounds horrible, poor you.
I'm fortunate in that I've not had anything replaced (yet) so am of no use with any ideas or advice. Just want to say I hope it gets sorted out soon and you get rid of what must be an utterly ghastly sensation.
What the others say about nerves coming back to life sounds likely. The only thing your description brings to mind is that sensation you get when, say, you've been sleeping with an arm twisted and wake up with 'pins and needles' as it comes back to life. Is it anything like that?

    Hi there
It could be nerve endings, that do give off strange sensations when touched, as you describe, or scar tissue from the operation. Worth getting a Docs opinion though, just to be sure. Hope it goes away very soon.

Thank you for the advice about the strange feeling of broken glass imbedded in my hip beside the scar where I had my hip operation last year. I went to the doctor and he says I have damaged nerves (neuralgia) It was either me doing too much excercise or I think me stretching down too far to cut my wee toe nail which I find very difficult to reach with both hands. I must have pulled and strained the muscles round where I had the operation then the imflamation damaged the nerve, something like that. It can get better in weeks or months I will just have to wait and see. I am glad I went to get it checked out though I was frightened I had damaged the tissue around the new hip joint. It just goes to show that even after a year after the operation you still have to be careful and not put strain on the muscles around the joint.
Thank you for you support.

Many thanks for that. I feel that my left hip is coming out through my skin and have to move a more comfortable position. It also gets very sore and pin pricky not always scar but in the surrounding muscle. This occurs when i do too much.
