I am fortunate to have Private Health cover but am changing to another provider and am trying to choose between them.. The much cheaper of the two will exclude my osteoarthritis of my hips for ever. The other provider has not excluded the osteoarthritis but of course costs more! What I'm wondering is, I understand from reading about Private Health that chronic conditions are not covered anyway so am thinking maybe they won't cover the condition when it actually came to needing any treatment in the future such as a hip replacement. Does anyone have any advice/words of wisdom they can offer me?

Many thanks.

I have Private Health, and it does cover the cost of any re-placements required due to OA.

I had a TKR in 2007, which would have cost £10,000 - so probably more now - had I had to pay for it. I was due to have the op privately, when my GP told me about a brand new facility, purely for joint re-placement on the NHS, opening not too far from me. I was lucky, and had the op there very quickly. An added bonus for me was that the Private Health Company sent me a cheque for two thirds of what it would have cost them.

I have continued with the Private Health. My thinking here is that I probably wouldn`t be so lucky next time, and the NHS waiting lists are so long.

I personally feel very comforted knowing that I can have treatment very quickly, should I need it..........Ange.

    Hi

If you decide to stay with your original provider that does not have the exclusion regarding your OA why not call them regarding a hip op in the future and ask them to clarify in writing?

I would ask them in writing of your fears, and give them some examples to answer, that way they can't wriggle out of anything at a later date. It may take a while to write but will be well worth it AND you will have peace of mind. x
