Had my TKR last friday in the afternoon, managed to escape from hospital on Monday at 2pm!
Very pleased with the level of pain, I do seem to have one rogue nerve firing off in the leg, hopefully that will settle.
From the moment I woke up I could feel that despite the pain from surgery, that the arthritic pain was gone, still very swollen and bruised.
The reason I escaped quickly, driving throught the pain to do the exercises and mobilise as much as possible.
I was so scared about this surgery, I shouldn't have been, amazing!

Hi Zec
So pleased to hear from you. I was a little worried because we never heard whether you were going to go for the op with the change of consultant or whatever, at the last minute. Great news that it went well and you were home so soon. Show off! New knees are wonderful aren't they?
Look after yourself,

Hi Zach, so pleased to hear you went ahead and it went well.
Out so soon - that is remarkable. Good advice though, about putting up with pain to prove you can pass their mobility criteria for escape - well worth it.
Hope swelling and bruising settle down soon.
Looking forward to regular updates ...
SpeedalongI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -

Hello
I am pleased to read your thread about your op. Lucky you and hope each day improves for you. It sounds like things went well for you.
I do have OA and luckily my xrays do not show any damage, so I am one of the lucky ones. Haven't had xrays on knees but assume they are ok. If ever, and I mean ever have to have this op, I hope I am as brave as you and everyone else on here who has had the op.
I have at least 3 friends from my art world who have had it done and I am amazed at how quickly they all got going afterwards.
All the best, and hope you have a good summer now

Thanks for the messages.
Unfortunately the thursday after surgery the pain kicked in BIG time,
I am just trying to ride it out and keep positive (very difficult),
will keep you posted on how it goes!0 -
Hi Zec
I am sorry to hear the pain kicked in after a few days. Join the club! I am still getting pain and discomfort off and on in the day, but mainly at night, and sleeping through the night is a distant memory for me! Firstly with the knee being bad before the op and now, afterwards too. As I have had one done before I do know that the pain will subside, for me, probably around July time and by August/September, I will have forgotten all about it! I am 10 weeks post op on Friday. There are very few lucky ones that experience no pain afterwards!
Hope it is bearable and meds help. Think forward, it definately does improve and you, like me, will be pleased you had it done.
Look after yourself,
Luv

Oh Zecheriah
I am so sorry
Keep positive - take your pain meds and remember you've already done the hard bit
I do hope all will be well for you soon

Hi Zech and Elna,
Wish I could take all that pain away for you both.
I think the night is worse ...... you don't know what to do with yourself, don't want to wake anyone else by trying to get comfortable or just get up and move. All the sounds are are louder than normal. The ceiling becomes a bore and one's bed becomes no more comfortable than the floor.
Sending you both some cyber stardust to make you sleep tonight.

Hi Zechariah
I'm so pleased that you're TKR went so well and you're back home. I was determined to get out of hospital asap - mainly because the food was terrible and I wanted a decent cup of tea! The bruising is quite amazing! I was black and blue from my thigh down to my toes.
It's just over 7 weeks since I had my TKR and things are still going well. I was using my ice packs 3/4 times a day during the first few weeks of being home. Now I'm down to 1 a day. Knee is still a bit swollen. I'm now walking without crutches around the home - it's really amazing especially as I was in a wheelchair prior to the op. I need my other leg doing too.
Did you have an epidural or nerve stints? I had nerve stints - never again - they gave me 3 as well as GA. I went in for surgery at 3.50pm and didnt' get out until 6.20pm. Apparently my leg was so bad that muscles etc had started to grow in strange places - the surgeon said he didn't want my other leg to go the same way. I had just been left too long. I've seen the new xrays of my new joint and it looks amazing especially when compared to before when my leg was bowed and bent out of shape.
Just take it easy and lie down when you feel tired. It's only these past couple of weeks that I've started to feel human again!!!
Take care.

Hi Zechariah
This happened to me too. In the end I rang my GP and she put me on a month's supply of Tramadol - my co-dydramol wasn't helping.
Speak to your GP if the pain is still bad. It helps your recovery if you're not in constant anguish. For the first 2 weeks my OH had to help me in/out of bed; chairs etc. Thank goodness he was around - because I was pretty useless! The ice packs help.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that you feel better soon.

I am already on a 20mcg Butrans patch, 2 x 30mg codeine every 4 hours and Nortriptyline at night for nerve pain!
I am not sure the doc could give me much more!0 -
Hi Zechariah
Sounds as if you're on a fair bit of stuff!!! I was sent out of hospital with co-codamol (2 days supply) and that was it.
Are you still in pain? I had a telephone appointment with my GP and she advised me to get back to her if the Tramadol didnt' help with my constant pain. If you are still in pain then give your GP a call. It is a helluva pain.
Take care and I hope you feel better soon.
