At the age of 72, due to severe osteo arthritis in my ankle, caused by sports injuries earlier in my life, I am on the list to have a 'total ankle replacement' probably in May. I wonder if any subscriber to this forum has had this operation and what their experience has been. :?:

    Welcome to the forum.

I can't help you with any info on ankle replacements I have only had a hip replacement - but I'm sure others will read your post and have more to say.

I hope lucyjepson sees your thread because she was being offered an ankle fusion ... which she wasn't keen on. She loves running as I recall.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Thanks for you welcome Speedalong.

I had the option of having 'ankle fusion' but with this procedure you don't have any movement in the ankle whereas with 'replacement' you retain whatever movement you still have. It's not for everybody but the consultant said I was an ideal candidate for 'replacement' as I was reasonably fit, not overweight and a non-smoker.

    Hello, nice to meet you.

I'm your age and I have the same problem. They offered me fusion as opposed to a replacement. Haven't had it done yet as I really can't take the recovery period on board - can't get wheelchair in my bedroom, plus other circumstances.

Am curious to know what the 'non-smoking' issue is all about - could it be that they won't let someone have it because they smoked?

I wish you well with this, keep us posted and let us know how you get on. I, for one would be very interested.

Hi...Welcome......I cant help you either....I've had a hip replacement but not an ankle.
I'm very interested in your post because 18 months ago a car knocked me down and went over my ankle...both tibia and fibia well smashed.I've now got metal plates, screws etc in it. When I was being X rayed before my hip op they decided to X Ray the ankle as well so the consultant said ...You need two new hips and by the way you have arthritis in your ankle!!!!! So after my hip operation it did occur to me was it poss to replace an ankle.....dont think it will be for a long time...if ever....its not giving me much bother at the moment.
    Keep us posted please
    Love

    Hi Elizabeth,
They told me it would be 4 months in a wheelchair. Just at the moment I couldn't cope with that - like you I'm needed by others.
The pain is amazing and I'm wondering how much more I can stand. I suppose the dr will have another go at me when I see her in the morning, but I really can't take it on board.

    Thanks Dolittle,
I cant do 2 months. It was bad enough having a hip replacement last summer as I found I was up and about doing far too much. They have just told me I need it done as I must be in lots of pain, CT scan first and then op but gave me no details but did ask if I had anyone at home to help me.

Thanks I will quiz the surgeon next time I see him.

    Thanks for your contribution Alanmancunian.

Ankle replacement are relatively new compared to hips and knees but techniques and materials are improving all the time -hopefully.
The information I've been given indicates that I should expect:
3 months to be fair, 6 months to be good and 12 months to be right. So it's a long job and not one I'm looking forward to. The surgeon also said that I should 'get 10 good years out of it' so it will be worth it.
