This has got me thinking. Ospreys mate for life, so do they fly in pairs all the way from Africa, or do they just hope to meet up with the right partner when they get to Scotland :?: And how do they know they've got the right one when they get there :?:

I need to know :!: :D

What a fantastic sight it must have been.

We are gradually getting more Red Kites over our way and they are beautiful to watch aswell. There are two of them who constantly fly over our house. Most unusual I have got their picture,so I am going to make that one of my painting projects next.

Mell, you know about birds. Can you answer my question, or is it one of life's unanswered questions :?:

I'll ask hubby in the morning .... if he is awake enough  or when he gets home from work ....... he may know because he spends a lot of time watching webcam footage of osprey nests round the country.

I do think they tend to return to the same nest sites year after year, so that may be one way they keep together.

More info when hubby has been interrogated :lol::lol::lol:

    Thanks Wonky,

While researching the answer to my question, I came across this:

"Male ospreys usually return before females to ensure the nest is looking spick and span when their mate returns.''

It seems that the female ospreys have got their mates well trained :D

Isn't it amazing that they fly thousands of miles, but still manage to meet up :?:

The two will spark their romance with an aerial courtship display and settle down to raise a second brood.

    How romantic :!: :D

I'm not sure if they travel in pairs Joan, they do nest at the same site so problably meet each other there, I was in North Wales a few years ago and they have a pair down there nesting, seems the took a worng turn but like it so much the keep coming back.
The bird specialist guarding the site said most stray birds are young ones as the older birds have established sites so don't stray to far.

    HI,

well Joan I don't have much to add, cos you had done all the hard work and hubby said he agreed that the males come first and do all the work  getting the home tidy (and building a spare just in case she is picky!!) , then the female turns up and inspects the nests and decided which one is the right one for this year!!!

so ...... they must have built in sat-navs that work

    Hi Wonky

Thank your husband for the information anyway. Ospreys are amazing birds, aren't they?

That must be the Welsh variety of the species :D They have a tendency to collect together in large groups, or scrums, get drunk, and then burst into song. Best avoided :!: :D
