my first RA shoes!

Today I purchased my first pair of shoes which I've had to factor RA into.

I'm going on a hot holiday at the end of the month and needed sandals.
My feet aren't too bad but wouldn't fancy walking for long in trendy, but totally flat hard things. So I took the bullet and bought....gulp....a pair of terribly sensible, but SO comfy Hush Puppies.

I got a terrible slagging off from everyone at my work - we're all under 30 and we work in fashion for a trendy shoe company so you can imagine the surprise that I wasn't purchasing some spangly gladiator type sandal. I'm now officially 'Granny Sandals'! :D

But I surprised myself at taking the whole thing pretty light-heartedly. I don't really give a crap if I'm not turning heads with my footwear, as long as I get to enjoy my holiday walking and sight-seeing, that's what's important.

So, Granny Sandals or not, I'm happy with my purchase and also with not letting this slightly crappy necessity get me down. :D

    Hi Capricia,

Nothing wrong with comfy shoes especially when your going to be on your feet a bit. I know i got my first pair after the first bit of surgery when I was 24 and got my leg pulled to the point I wanted to start screaming  :lol: I wonder now though if my feet despite the oa and ops and bits missing are maybe in better nick than the people who wouldn't let it drop's feet now are with their fashion shoes  Hey enjoy your hols :D Cris x

You could start a new trend Caprica :D ...we'll follow with our own Granny Sandel Club in our own areas and we might conquer the Uk and then the world

My first RA footwear were bright blue ankle boots ...I loved those boots

Have a lovely holiday and enjoy your comfies.

Haha, Val, I LOVE my crocs too. But I do only wear them around the house or when I go to the swimming pool. They're a bright lurid green :D I get slagged off for those too, but people just don't know what they're missing!

Chris, damn straight - I'm sure there's no benefit to be had from forcing feet into pointy torture shoes, arthritis or no arthritis!

Linda, please do join me in my new trend. I need all the help I can get! (Blue ankle boots sound pretty funky actually, rock n roll! :P )

I love my crocs! I wear them out and about too. (And this was pre-arthritis) :D:D I have bright pink, purple, blue etc. They were a life saver after I tore the ligaments in my ankle and couldn't get my foot in a shoe.

Have you heard of Fit Flops? If not google them 'cause they're great! I got a pair of boots from there and they are so comfy. The balance board thingy (great description, I know!) in them are amazing. I can really tell the difference now when I wear regular shoes.

Hi, I think you're being very sensible and I know that one of the things that really spoil a walk is sore feet! So, you'll be the one laughing when the other girls are moaning and complaining about bleeding blisters and trying to hobble along with sore feet!

    Love Sue

    well done you!!! :D:D:D

it is so important to be comfy if you're going to be doing lots of walking, even more so when your feet are already struggling with RA. I tis so difficult to express to others just how painful it can be walking at all when arthur is in a bad mood, let alone in 'silly' shoes

and well I never really did understand all the fashion-loving lot and their thinking that it was 'normal' to go out wearing stuff that hurt before you'd walked anywhere in them   but that's me, and it wouldn't do for us all to be the same

greatly admire your positive attitude though .... keep it up!

    Hi Wonky,
I have walking shoes and 'sitting down' shoes! My husband thinks I am silly to bother with the 'sitting down' shoes! He makes remarks about not understanding women!!!

    Hi
welcome to the Granny club!! Or the "I care about my feet club" I have worn comfy shoes/sandals/trainers for years and years ... I'm not into pain for fashion.

I think I would get seriously noticed and ribbed by friends and colleagues if I started to wear trendy/fashion shoes ...

    Happy walking on your hols!!

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi caprica!
hope you have a great holiday. :D
I recently asked peeps on the forum for advice about comfy shoes and got lots of helpful suggestions.

After trying out various types I've settled on 'Fly Flot' as they were the most comfy and had the dreaded but really necessary (for me) velcro fastenings! so I am definitely in the granny shoes club now. :D

I don't care what people think (my family did rib me about them) as my feet feel great and I don't struggle any more trying to get arther feet into shoes. :P :D

    Hi

I've had this discussion before on this site - I dress really quite trendy and still wear trendy shoes. Both my feet suffer with RA but if you shop around, you will find some trendy comfy shoes. Clarks for example - now that really surprised me but on all the shoes I wear, from people who don't even know I have RA, comment on my beautiful shoes!
