Hi Tricia
the tens machine sends small electrical pulses to your brain so that it can send more pain relief to where the pain is.
You have 2 or more patches that you position where the pain is attached the wire to patches and tens machine then off you go. My machine has different types of massages and different pulse levels.
I got my machine from lloyds pharmacy as they do cheap deals sometimes.
I find the machine does not get rid of the pain but it does mask it as you seem to be aware of the little pulses that it takes your mind of the pain. Not every one likes them it is very much a personal matter. I like mine especially if it is a big joint like my shouder, back or hip playing up. Not very good for small joints as you have to position patches apart.
Hope this helps

Hi Tricia
I too have the same probs as you. I have RA and also mild OA in my knees. I too am 54 and I am also starting acupuncture next week (monday) so we can swap notes on the accupuncture.
The tens machine, yes I have one, when I was first diagnosed with RA two years ago my physiotherapist lent me one to try and it didnt help. However, a couple of months ago she lent me it again and I found it did help, and I use it regularly now. My machine has three settings including an acupuncture setting and that is the setting I use most often.
My physio lent me the machine for a couple of weeks, then when I decided I wanted to buy one, she ordered one for me - I had to pay £22 but it is a good one the hospitals use, she let me continue to borrow the machine she lent me until the new one arrived. It would be worth asking a physio if you can lend one to try it out before you decide to buy one as some people dont seem to get benefit from them.
