Was so desperate for a sleep last night that I tried everything. Took usual painkillers, had a long soak in an aromatherapy bath and took one Herbal Nytol (had them left over from when S was increasing epilepsy meds and side affects meant he couldn't sleep) AND I slept!! Must have moved around in night or been very relaxed as not even stiff in morning ... Pity body gets used to things like Nytol - so can't use every night ... but knowing can occasionally - is a blessing. Can take 2 if necessary - so still room to up dose if I do get tolerant/resistant. Would take earlier next time though as still felt doped in the morning. I did wake at one point was to herbed-out to care!!

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

I slept well too as have not slept well since knee op at the end of January. I have stopped my anti inflams and painkiller as I have been feeling so lethargic, tired along with stomach pains and feeling sick off and on too.
Only stopped them all for two days, as said, slept well, woke once, but the joints are suffering a little this morning because of no anti inflams. I shall see how it goes. I feel "alert" though as I did yesterday morning so methinks the cocodamol make me lethargic. When I have finished my coffee I shall do my stretching exercises and hopefully that will help
Let's hope we sleep well tonight againand wake refreshed
luv

Hi Elna
I was on tramadol for the first 6 weeks after my TKR but they made me very lethargic. I'm back on my old meds co-dydramol and diclofenac - I certainly feel more energetic and altert. The cocodomal is stronger than the codydramol.
How is your new joint doing? Any more swelling? I notice that my foot tends to swell when I overdo things - I'm using the ice less often now. The operated leg is definitely my stronger limb. I haven't been sleeping too these past few days. I've decided it's because my quilt is too warm - I'm going to risk putting the summer duvet on. Our central heating has broken so I'm pleased about the warmer weather.
Take care and I hope we all manage a good night's sleep!

Hi Sharmaine
I do not use the ice now. If I cannot sleep/wake up with pain then I get a heated wheatbag - more comforting than the ice, I find. Early days, ice all the time - could not beat it - numb the pain!!
I do not find that my foot swells. The whole leg sometimes aches but then I am on my feet most of the day, unless I am on the forum, which is quite often! The knee and I are most definitely becoming very good friends.
I had a quick glance in my 2008 diary, the year of my last TKR and saw that by August, if not a little before, I was not mentioning anything about not sleeping well and actually did not mention the knee much at all so that obviously means things were ok and the op, practically forgotten
The area around the knee is still a little swollen but I can wear jeans ok - does not rub on the scar when bending the knee/cycling etc.
Enjoy the lovely weather! 8)

I am really pleased to read that. It gets so depressing night after night of laying awake and then feeling so exhausted the next day.Long may it continue...

Hi Elna
I'm rather attached to my wheat bag (I only bought it a few weeks ago) - lovely! It's good to hear that your 2008 diary reveals that you didn't have too many complaints re your first TKR and lack of sleep.
The weather has been lovely and I spent a good hour cutting back a few things yesterday. The snow destroyed my rosemary and thyme plus a few other plants. A good excuse to buy replacements. We're going to mooch around the car boot tomorrow.
Take care Elna and have a good weekend.
