One hand tray

Hi,
I seem to be using my stick (crutch) more around the house than ever - but walk quicker and better than without. This is a nuisance when carrying for eg two drinks.
I have started putting them in the bread maker tin as it has a handle and then I can carry them together. I need to find something else as the cups will scratch the non stick surface inside.
I remember seeing one handled trays years ago and wondering if they really didn't tip.

ideal for 2 drinks http://www.essentialaids.com/one-hand-tray-with-fold-down-handle-24694-0.html
Has anyone got these and are they really safe? Or any other ideas of what I could make own cheapo version with?

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

It's what they used to use old-fashioned tray mats for......I've used an old cotton pillow case before and probably newspaper would do as well - although neither will look very up-market! If it's just a temporary measure I should think either will do.......I haven't tried the new ones at all.

Hi speedalong,
I've not used either of these so really don't know if they would work.....you'd need a steady hand by the looks of it?
What about using a trolley for moving bits and bobs, plates and cups around? was it sharmaine that posted a thread about them..not sure.:?
maybe someone else will have tried out the one handed tray...will be interesting to find out if they are useful.

Hi speedalong
I haven't tried these trays, but they look like you need a steady hand and the 'lip' isn't very deep ..
What about those oblong strong plastic containers with an integral handle that you can buy to store/carry cleaning stuff from room to room? I can't think what they are called, but they are fairly cheap, they have two sections and quite deep, so drinks would not tip over...
Best wishes

Brilliant idea Marion ... I've got a spare one in my classroom - I'll try it and see.
Iris, I haven't had my trolley etc delivered yet and really wanted something portable that would be great for going up and downstairs and also into the garden.
I think the one hand trays are supposed to be designed so that you can put a dicem or damp tea towel (or pillow case/newspaper as suggested by Annie) on them and the handles adjust to your movements and the items placed on the tray so that it doesn't tip - I just wasn't sure if they were as good as claimed ...

I like Marion's idea too........and easier / cheaper to buy. (my scottish thrift is showing.)

Hi Speedalong
I've had my trolley for a few weeks now and despite initial reservations about whether or not it would be useful, in fact I am finding lots of uses for it, inlcuding using it as a 'desk' for my laptop, transporting shopping from the front door to the kitchen, as well as using it for meals... however, it's lighter than I was expecting and has a tendency to 'run away' with itself, so you have to be careful with it..
best wishes

Hi Marion.
I will see have to see how useful my trolley is when it comes. Do you have laminate floors?
Have you got all your equipment in place now? I was given a form to fill in re heights of equipment etc at pre-op - and have to phone through what they are - as the pre-op was short notice I did not have the forms in advance. I also had to say what I had already etc

Hi Speedalong
Yes, I have laminate floors and tiles in the kitchen - easier to keep clean with having various dogs and cats over the years..
I am just waiting for a raised toilet seat and will then have all my equipment. The high chair is not the most attractive in the world, but it is good for me as my sofa is too low and 'risers' are not suitable for my sofa. I keep tripping over the back legs of the perching stool for some reason, which really jars my hip, so I'm not sure whether I will be using it, which is a shame as it is otherwise a good stool. The toilet surround is fine and I have 2 grabbers, one for upstairs and one for down. Not tried the 'sock putter onner' yet!!

Hi Marion - thought that might be why your trolley kept rolling away - I have quarry tiles in kitchen and carpets elswhere - the hall carpet is joined scraps and the trolley I had last time didn't push over the joins very easily/
Two grabbers hey!! I only had one last time and ended up buying a second one. I was looking today to see if I could velcro it to my stick as I seem to be so clumsy lately and constantly dropping things/knocking things off ... then I would be able to pick them up quickly!!
My perch stool is a perch chair. I have it so the slopey back legs are against the work surface and it is facing out into the room, I then turn it round if I need too. I can trip over fresh air!!
I had a chair last time and hated it - the look of it and the fact that it wasn't even comfy.
Do you have a long handled shoe horn too? I never used mine, but some reason still have it. Have a go with the sock putter oner - it's a knack worth getting the hang off in advance.

Hi Marion and speedalong
I'm having laminate flooring throughout the downstairs fitted tomorrow as I've had enough of the hoovering milarky...just too painful ! I'm not looking forward to all the upheaval and mess but the guy fitting it is doing all the furniture moving and carpet uplifting for me so that's definitely a plus!
I have a raised toilet seat and frame around the loo....my little grandsons and other small children visiting think it's hilarious! It has caused much merriment especially for little Tom (4) as he can't quite 'reach' (if you know what I mean) so I've bought a little stool for him!
Speedalong I liked the description of trying to velcro the lifter to your stick....going about 'fully armed' ha ha!!
I've been following Sharmaine's thread about the 'new' risers that she has bought...so if they work I'm going to get them as I have real trouble getting off the sofas and chair and there's just no more room to add a higher chair . x
I've resisted having a perching stool...not much room for it and as I already have two big labs to manoeuvre 'round in the kitchen I'd end up on the floor for sure....a tangle of dog and metal

Hi Iris - how did the floor fitting go?
Delboy - thanks for that info. Does it have a special name?

Ha ha!! That wasn't a trick question you know!!

hi speedalong,
the first part of the laminate floor fitting is today! the house is in chaos and I'm sitting in the middle of it all just now, as though I've not a care in the world tapping out one fingered on the keyboard!
but hooray! the sun is shining (although very cold) so once the fitters arrive I might just go out to the greenhouse...I've got power out there so can make tea...even have a wee heater on if necessary!
The fitters are doing all the furniture shifting but I'm dreading the clean up afterwards with the dust from the laminate cutting.
the carpet and vinyl lay comes later...a week or so I think.x

Morning Iris, you are an early bird!! I would definitely get settled in the greenhouse - it does sound a lot of upheaval - should be lovely when it is done though. I need new carpets etc - but the thought of the disruption always puts me off too - at least the fitters are moving the furniture ... it's the tittle tattle that takes the time though isn't it?!
Back to school today for me, need to tell boss and staff about my op date ... and start planning my removals (emptying classroom of all my stuff - I have enough carbooted stuff and homemade resources to start up my own independent school!!! Oh gee!!!) School is a real struggle now, but once I'm in my classroom with the door shut - I love it. It's all the politics and lack of decent leadership that drives me mad .... I'm like you tapping away and should be getting on.

I've always been an early riser and love the morning freshness and quiet...I would often be out with my dogs at 6am..my family think I'm bonkers as they would chose to lie in bed if they could.
Ive just seen BBC are doing a bit on tv about Barra & the Uists where I lived! yipee..have to watch it! Monty Halls Great Hebridean Adventure... tomorrow night BBC2. fabulous places!.x
good luck with going back to work.....and get rid of all that clutter!!!!
will be thinking about you...

Hi Speedalong.
I've never tried the trays but as others say you sound as if you need a very steady hand for it LOL
My trolly was great. Like someone else said...my laptop sits on it now LOL but at the beginning it was used to transport all sorts of things. I have laminate floors in the kitchen {which is tiny} but carpet everywhere else and managed it OK.....I only got one grabber but I was told by someone that they got one for personal use and one to be returned with the rest of the equipment. I'm discovering now that you have to ask for things....if you know someone else has got something and you think it will help ask for it. Never used my longhandled shoe horn.....I didnt get a stocking putter onner LOL
Love Hileena0
