I was put on Steriods about a month and was put on decreasing dose. I have been fantastic, being able to move again and no pain to think or feel about.

I am now on 1 5ml steriod a day a after 3 days of this dose the pain in my back and slightly in my hands are coming back.

I am so worried about being in the pain I was and if it continues I am sure I wont be able to go back to work as off till June. More stress as they could decide to not support my sickness and give me the boot.

I am just scared of the pain again really

Thanks for letting me rant xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    Hi Claire,

    you are definitely not ranting!

After having such a good result I really do hope that arther isn't creeping back. maybe it's just a blip?

when are you back at the rheummy or your doc? if it isn't soon perhaps give them a ring to ask for advice if things don't settle again. x

try not to worry too much (I know easier said than done :( )

I will keep my fingers crossed for you....Iris x

    Thanks Iris,

I have Rummy on Friday but I think I am worrying more about work and being in pain again really.

I am writing it down this time as I was no way complismentis last time I was there as no meds and I couldnt even have a conversation. Hopefully my hubby can come again

    Hope you are ok.

    Love and hugs.

    Love Claire

    Hi again Claire,

this might sound naive...but please try not to worry about work just now......maybe when you speak to rheummy they will look at what other meds can now be considered that will get arther under control?

I remember you said the steroids were a trial to help get a diagnosis? to see if it was IA? so the fact that you have improved with steroids might now mean you move on to something that is a longer term treatment, effective for IA..... so it may make it easier for you to go back to work.

I hope your OH can go with you for your next appointment...2 heads better than one! and it is a good idea to write it all down too.

    stay strong.

    Dear Claire

So sorry to hear that some pains appear to be creeping back.. Have you only recently been diagnosed? Do you have RA? Thank goodness you are seeing your rheumy soon. It's a very good idea to write things down - at my first appointment I was in a state of shock, at my second I just cried all the way through, but at my third I had a list of 12 questions to ask, and I came out of that appointment feeling much more 'in control.'

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Hi Claire

W e had a thread about reducing steriods a while back. When you take steroids, your body stops producing cortisone, which helps with inflammation. So when you reduce the steriods, your body doesn't know to start producing cortisone again. It does start eventually so that is why you feel so rough with when you reduce your dose. It takes time but it will get better, you have to grin and bear it I'm afraid and can take a few weeks.

Steroids are wonderful for short term but the side effects are horrible and you do not want those. You have a few weeks left until you go back to work, so use this time to get off them.

    Good luck

Hi Claire,I was on steroids for four/five weeks last year and once I was weaned off them,I was almost pain free for the following five months so maybe you will be lucky and the bad pain won't return straight away. After a really bad bout of pain and stiffness the past 3 months,I'm now back on steroids and it's wonderful to feel 'normal'again. However I know I will only be on them for a month so will have to wait and see how quickly the pain returns this time. The steroids are to tide me over until I see the rheumy consultant again in May.I'm on 6x5mg daily at the moment but my Gp will lower the dose when I see him next week. Breane. :)
