La la land.

Hi all, right when I get a flare and start me pain meds(Tramadol and OxyNrom) it doesn’t take long before I start acting really scatty (well more than normal!), I can’t concentrate and my emotions are all over the place, I also become quite paranoid, it’s as if my head is full of barbed wire, when I get like this I always seem to make an **** of myself mostly with the poor old union man at work, my normal avenue of stupidity is via e mails not sure why but maybe it’s because it’s my window on the world so much these days, also once the flare ahs passed it takes a few days for my giros to stabilise, once they have I look back and ask myself what the hell I was up to, it's like I know I'm acting dappy but can't stop myself!.
So my question is this, does anyway else find that they act in a similar fashion during a flare?. :?:

HI
Are you sure its not the tramadol that does this as it makes me dopey  but a friend of mine goes to a place similar to you. I have noticed I am much more emotional in flare and a bit unpredictable I think its my frustration at not being able to do things and the level of pain. I get nightmares with tramadol as well so sleeping doesnt happen for days after having it.
Your lala land sounds better than my dopey land any day although I dont work now due to pain and being dopey.
sending you hugs

Hi and hello
Yep im dappy all the time. i forget have sentance what i was saying and always forget things.
Hope ur feeling alittle bit more head clear today
Hugs all the way Allix0 -
Hi Mellman, I didn't get on at all well with Tramadol due to side effects even though pain wise it is was effective.
My brain is more dopey when my pain is worse and also due to the fact that my sleep hasn't been good for months. I'm also more ratty as everything is a struggle when tired and in pain. My tolerance is lower and things annoy me more.
Hope your flare ends soon.
Perhaps you should get into the habit of saving emails you have typed during flares to your drafts folder and then check them over after your flare before sending them?
SpeedalongI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Hi Mel,
Tramadol makes me tired and I wake as if I got a hangover....... I wonder if pregabalin would be better for you? They do use it for people waiting for replacements cus mate of mine was given it..... I honestly think different drugs would be better for you? Might be worth asking the doc and have you ever been referred to a pain clinic? I really hope you can get some pain help that doesn't send you to L L Land. Talk to your gp if you can and they listen and see if you could try something else. hey what anti flams do you have? Cris xx0 -
High guys and galls, well at least I'm not that strange after all then!, I could try prgabablin is it a decent pain killer skezer?. I take Nortriptyline and it's OK but no good if me OA is on the march.0

Hi Mel,
I find it superior to anything else I have been given... it did make me a bit high but have been on it for 2 years and its still reasonably effective. Its still a bit dodgy for me to take 300 in one hit but sometimes I have to..... Its not so bad I am one of these sad people who get drunk on half a glass of wine so the heavy duty tablets are always going to make my brain go off with the fairies but its not like the thing that's happening to you, you can still function fine... just your a bit happy and I use meditation a lot fro pain and they can help with the drift  Nope I haven't taken them yet this is just me Cris xx0 -
Hi mellman,
I wonder if it's the combination of drugs you're taking that's causing the 'tripping'?
Both tramadol and oxynorm are both very powerful and perhaps it's the interaction of the two that's a problem for you?
bit of a coincidence that you're noticing changes in behaviour when taking them...so they might be the culprit!
I had a look at the side effects for oxy norm and read it can cause mood swings or changes, agitation or restlessness.
It can also cause Pins and needles or numb sensations; I remember you also said before that you had experienced that?.
Maybe a chat with the pharmacist would help...they know more about the meds than the doc; might be worth asking as you may need a change of drugs.
and as speedalong said...don't send the emails when you feel that LL way!!
hope you're now back to 'normal' mellman!

Hi Mell
I thought I was getting on fine with tramadol, till my friend took me to one side...and I was acting quite strange..I told my OH and he said come to think about it yeah you do :shock:Love

Mellman,
Should you be mixing oxinorm & Tramadol? I was on Tramadol but am on oxicontyn, oxinorm & paracetomal now.
It would seem to me that you are on 2 very powerful painkillers and I am not sure they should be mixed, I have always been told it's one or the other.
I have never experienced a 'high' of any effects with any of the painkillers i have taken, I eem to havequite a high tolerance to that & sedatives which is not a good thing.
Check with your GP or pharamisct.

I would think that it is the tramadol, Mel. It affects people in different ways, or not at all, other than lessening pain.
Tramadol sent my mum paranoid, whilst in hospital. We kicked up such a fuss to get her off it, in the end they gave her a wash out and she wore a band around her wrist informing all the medics/staff on no account was she to be given that drug.

Hi Mel, Ive had several pain meds and I have been on tramadol for a couple of months and I do find I go into la la land but they take the pain away. When I'm having a bad flare I do get ratty and frustrated but I think thats because I feel useless when I can't do things for myself. I did hallucinate with one pain med can't remember the name of it but I kept seeing spiders running all over the place, on my bed and on my youngest son, totaly freaked me out and scared my sons.
Julie((((hugs)))) n xxxxx to ya all0 -

Hi Julie and all, thanks for the replies, Haven't had that but I did have a couple of really horific nightmares on Nortriptyline I think stress at work did it, by god it was real and totally crazy, they were so vivid that for a second or two after making up I still thought I was there, not good really freaked me out.
As for Tramadol it feels like a mix of pain lack of sleep and strong meds that all come together, I like you get really ratty and snappy, it's almost like when I use to come off a set off 12 hour night shifts, I think the poor old union chap thinks I'm a little bit crazy, probably true after all the crap I have had to put up with!. Knees are good today, what a relief it is to feel normal for an hour or so!.0 -
Hi Mel,
Your tablets are working against you as a person even if they are helping with pain. I honestly think pregabalin is worth a try and that should make it so you will not need too much tramadol and can drop the others. See your doc and explain to him what the tablets are dong to you and hopefully he will come up with another routine for you. I think you could benefit by seeing the pain clinic as well and they are very good at getting you on the right meds if your not already on them. Cris x0
