Hi

Well - just 5 days now until I have my hip replacement (Thursday, 6th).. I am not at all worried about the operation, but have been quite stressed this week trying to get straight at work and stocking up the freezer and cupboards at home and trying to remember everything I will need in the hospital!

On Wednesday I could'nt find my car keys so had to get a last minute lift into work (I found then in the evening in the dogs' toy basket, tangled up with their leads), on Thursday I had a panic in sainsburys as I thought I had lost my purse (it was actually on the counter - as the assistant pointed out!) and yesterday I couldn't find my denture/false tooth so had to go to work without it (I found it pn a shelf in the fridge last night!).. I hope this is only a temporary blip in my brain functioning!!!

    Oh Marion!

You're brain is trying to deal with too much......all the preparations for you going into hospital and organising everything to the finest detail...and also having work on top of that....something has to give!

Perhaps your brain is telling you 'enough' that you need time now to rest for the op...have your hair done, buy some nice toiletries and a book even go to the cinema or out to dinner....simple straightforward, stress-less activities. It's enough on it's own to be going into hospital without trying to be superwoman.:wink:

Lots of love and good wishes for your op; I will be thinking about you on the day..... and looking forward to hearing how you;ve got on when you get back home.
    take care meantime!

    Hi Marion,

I keep joking that my brain has started to deteriorate along with my hip. I'm sure you are losing things just because you have lots on your mind. I left my debit card at the supermarket last Monday ... realised I had lost it when I went to pay for a replacement hoover ... luckily it had been handed in at the supermaket!! I fell over putting out the recycling boxes - not sure if turned too fast or tripped over slightly raised paving stone and this morning I leapt (slight exageration!!) out of bed because I thought it was a school day and that we had overslept...

Have you written lists of what you need to do and pack?

At least this weekend is a long weekend so you have an extra day to get organised.

Has your OT stuff been delivered?

What day are you finishing at work?

Just think this time next week you will be recovering ...

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Iris,

S wise - arrangements in place for first two weeks and two days after op. Social story books made re my hospital stay and about me coming home and how I'll be. Lists and routines all written up read. Finances in place for his keep and expenses. He is calm and happy so that is good too.
Have digressed today as he can vote for the first time this year - so have been making him a book about voting and searching for easyread manifestos for him ...

Schoolwise - doing pretty well too. Classroom nearly cleared thanks to superb colleagues and friends. Paperwork nearly all up to date and finished. Quite a few extra meetings to fit in this week.

Homewise - still awaiting OT equip. Have borrowed wheelchair for duration. Not managed to sort out mobility scooter yet. Desperately need to sort out house ready - this is now my main priority. Next two Mondays are S free - so that (body willing or not) will be my focus. I finish work on Friday - so will also have the Tues before my op ...

Prob best this way - no time to worry about op. Will be able to rest on the operating table!!

    Thank you for asking.

12th May is your op...not the 12th June and you're going to be organising right up to the date :?:  you mad woman you!!

Kidding aside we are all different and you know best what works for you .
I am pleased S is feeling calmer and that everything to be done for him is in hand...that was such a worry for you, I know. x

take care though...you are human.

It's a big event - the pre-op stuff takes planning and organisation and that you will achieve: regarding what you need for hospital, well, I cannot do without anti-bacterial gel (they're grubby places), baby wipes (they're hot, sticky places) and Johnson's baby talc. Pure luxury. I also need my reading specs, some good books, my MP3 player and clean underwear/nightwear.

It will all go well, I'm sure, and you will have plenty of support here. We will be thinking of you. Dreamdaisy

    Hi Iris

You are right.. I actually went to my orchestra this morning (I play the violin - very badly) and it took my mind off things., so I felt a lot calmer this afternoon.. I

t's bizarre .. if I didn't know better I would think I was going on holiday - I bought lots of t shirts and some summer skirts and nightdresses and toiletries and sun tan cream and books and dvds today. It's the thought that I won't be driving again until July that is hard to comprehend though!

    Hi Speedalong

You have so much more on your plate than I have - but it sounds like you are doing a great job there!

I have to go to the hospital on Tuesday morning ,with a group of other patients, to meet the OTs and learn about how to cope aferwards, etc, and then I will finish work on Tuesday afernoon.

My final piece of equipment (toilet seat) is coming on Wednesday -but I understand that for some people their equipment is delivered at home whilst they are actually in hospital! That would worry me .. so perhaps you should give them a call on Tuesday?

Yep - have got several lists on the go!

The hospital is 45 minutes drive away , up the M6, (my choice - I didn't want to go anywhere else) so we are leaving home about quarter to six on Thursday to get there for 7 00 am - all being well.. (oh no, I'm worrying about the car having a puncture now !!)

    Hi Marion,

I think we go into overdrive when preparing to go in for an op......the house just has to be cleaned from top to bottom and cupboards emptied and reorganised.
and yes...buying ahead of time the things you might need, when you can't go out shopping, is an instinct you can't ignore! but remember there is the internet.

Sounds just perfect though taking time out to play in the orchestra....wonderful to have that talent and skill. :D

    Hi Marion

You are well organised and that is brilliant and it is good to hear that you are not anxious about the operation. We all have these memory blips from time to time, when the mind is going into overdrive. So don't worry about that  During your stay in hospital and then once home you will be getting quite a lot of 'me' time, probably too much and you may even get bored.:lol: You sound as if you are a person who does not usually "lounge around". Life will be so much easier for you with your new hip :D

    I wish you well,

    Luv

    Hi Marion,

I think the waiting and idea of being laid up is the worse bit and well done for getting it all sorted in advance. I haven't had the hips done, was offered them but I am stupid enough to forget what I could and couldn't do so for now the idea my own are best for me. I did have a huge op on my back and was in hospital for almost a month with another 3 before i could walk and it drove me u the wall! Its was well worth it though and it will be for you as well I reckon.

Get somethings to keep your mind occupied and take it easy as well before the op.

Sending you shed loads of luck and you will soon be back telling us how well it went. Cris x

    Hi Speedalong,

Hope your not polishing lists and have a good day as well? You will be fine and think of all the things you will be able to do after the op :D Good luck to you as well and hope you and S have a good bank holiday. Cris x

Hi Cris - I have sent S to school today!!! My heart tells me I'm mean, but my head tells me this was a sound decision. I can't prep the house when he is here - he gets bored and it is twice as hard physically for me because each time I have a quick sit - he thinks it is his time - and it should be - but I'm exhausted then....

So I have been blitzing the house - I will feel so much better when it is done ... but it will take more than today. Been at it almost 5 hours already bar short sit downs - this is one of them - beginning to ache now.

Hope you are managing to do something a bit different too.

Berty - great that you are posting - how are you doing today?

    Hi folks

Thanks very much indeed for all your good wishes.. I do appreciate them. I have been really busy over the weekend so not had chance to come on the forum..

I went to the hospital again this morning to have an 'education session' with the OT and apparently my consultant doesn't like his patients to drive until 12 weeks post-op - it will be very strange when I DO get behind the wheel again (in JULY!!)

Still got some final things to do tomorrow -taking the dogs into the kennels first thing - they find it all very exciting there, but I will worry about them, and then (don't read this Iris) I'm going to do a final house cleaning session!!.

I'm a bit scared about how I will be the first week or so after the operation, so have decided to stay with my sister/brother-in-law for 2 weeks as they are worried I will fall down my very very steep stairs and split my stitches!

I'm afraid I missed the deadline for a postal vote, but no doubt will spend Friday watching the TV on the ward (whilst doing my exercises of course).!

Speedalong - I do hope everything goes OK for you on 12th. I am sure your friend will look after things at home really well. I'm looking forward to reading about your experiences ...

I won't have access to my laptop tomorrow, but will be back on the forum as soon as I can, next week ...

    Thanks again everyone..
