Talking to my mate the other day he told me about a little problem he had with BT, it all started when they went through the phone bill and noticed small amounts of money( a few pence here or there) being charged to them but they didn't recognise the numbers, also the duration was very short, when he did a bit of investigating via BT it turns out it was or is call centre calls, you know the ones, do you want a loan can we sell you really crappy window for an arm and a leg or my pet hate dead calls, well it turns out what they do now is get you to pay for their call to you!, neat eh!!, I have been having this problem recently as well even though we are ex directory, the cold calling that is, so I am going to look at my phone bill this week too see if the same has happened to us, I will keep you posted.

What? Are they really able to charge you for a call they make which you haven't solicited? Flamin' Norah. Dreamdaisy

I pay a set fee each month so I will never know. We are ex directory too but still get these calls. I think they are passed/ sold on from charities or companies that you have given the details to.That is the only explaination I can think of.

I don't think having an ex-directory phone number means anything anymore - selling on contact numbers and addresses is big business these days.

So true. Who says you always have to give out a correct number anyway? There are a few occasions when I don't. I haven't been cold-called for some time now - plus the fact the answerphone is always on. DD

I don't think they should be allowed to sell phone numbers especially if your number ex directory

sounds like bt don't really care about our privacy otherwise they would do something, just shows as my dad used to say " money talks " he used to say if you want to pay a bill etc cash always seems to be one laugague everyone understands

    Hi Jan
0845 and 0870 numbers are now free with our set fee company. They promised us reduced mobile phone numbers when we joined in March but that hasnt materialised. Trying to negotiate with them now.
