HI
A jsut wondering if any of you have an inflammatory arthritis and also OA. Reason being I have been told I have an inflammatory arthritis (often referred to as sponydlarthropathy and AS) but have also got sigificant wear adn tear in knee which I am waiting for another operation and more recently have noticed my shoulder is crunching when i try to circle it and can get quite painful.
Could the wear be caused my the inflammation - by that i means can the inflammation damage the joint? I read somewhere that certain type of arthritis can cause the cartlidge to soften.
Can the arthritis be causing the wear and tear or the other way around?

As far as I know you can have joint damage from having both types .....the inflammatory arthers... and..... osteo arther (so called 'wear and tear)
that's why rheummy's are always treating the inflammation...to prevent or minimise joint damage.
have posted a link for you that explains it far better than I ever could!

Hi Bailey,
Sorry flower you can cus I got both, side by side in my neck and shoulders but they are devised as the oa is doing my lower back, hips, knees and feet and the pa is after my elbows and wrists. Hey a doctor once told me you couldn't get both..... boy was he wrong  A (((( )))) and with decent pain relief it isn't too bad so hang in there and try not to worry. Cris x0 -
Hi Baily27
I have OA of neck and spine, OA is classed as wear and tear, although i know there are many differnent types of Arthritis. They say wear and tear is as you get older, but it can set in through doing heavy type work, lifting, as myself in nursing, at a much younger age.

Hi, I have OA, in quite a lot of joints and my spine, I'm 55, my Mum also had OA badly and its something that I remeber her having when I was little, so althoug, at that time I thought she was old, she can't have been as old as I am now!
I read some research on the new Arthritis Research site (used to be Arthritis Research Campaign, but recently changed its name) and they are looking at lots of new ideas about oa and its causes. They say it is not just a disease of old age, its worth looking through their new site.
As for a link between the ra and oa, I don't know, but it may be possible, one irritating the other They keep checking me for RA as I have some of the symptoms, but so far so good.

I've had RA since age 5. The way my doctor explained it to me, my RA eventually led to premature wear and tear (OA) in other joints. If I hadn't had RA, I might still have had OA in those joints, I just would have been a lot older.
What's really important is to keep that inflammation as low as possible, and not just for your joints. Some studies have shown that chronic inflammation in your joints, over time, can lead to gum problems, even arterial blockage and heart problems. So if you're on meds and still having inflammation, keep looking for a better medication.bailey27 wrote:HI

I ma positive they are not elping each other. I am due to see the orthopeadic dr next week and not sure what he is going to do. He said he was going to operate but from what my Gp said he may be reluctant to because I have an inflammatory type of arthritis. I am really baffled because what else can I do??? The knee is restricting my exercising, which in turn makes by joint stiff becasue I can not move them as much so am going around in circles!!0

I think you need to tell the consultant almost word for word what you just said here.
If you can that is.
Then at least he/she will understand where you are coming from and you will be able to make a constructive decision from whatever he/she says in response.
good luck - when is your apt??

Hi
My appoitnment is next week, quite nervous for some reason but eager to find out whats going to happen - alhtough I dont particularly want to know- if that makes sense? lol0 -
Hi Bailey
Your questions are interesting. Like yourself I have OA in both knees and real problems with my right shoulder. I know that OA is a disease that attacks the joint .... not being fluent in anatomy I wouldn't know if it causes problems with the cartilage! Someone out there may know.
How do you cope with your shoulder? I find using an ice pack and then a heat pad helps with the discomfort but it doesn't sort the problem completely. When it really flares up I slap on deep heat as well as taking my meds.

thanks both. the pain in my shoulder never goes no matter what i do. If i move it it hurts if I keep it still it hurts, really deep inside. When moving it I feel like I am catching something inside and have to circle it a bit and let it pop before I can move it. sometimes I will get deep burning inside. When I move it slowly, no matter what direction i can hear and feel it crunching away inside. Not very pleasnat. This pain is horrible it is nothing like the pain I get in my hips and back so dont want to pay too much attention to it at appointments becasue i want them to concentrate on fixing other bits of me first!! lol oh dear! lol not good is it!0

I think you should tell your doctor everything that's hurting, but make it clear what your priorities are. Then you can discuss all the pros and cons of starting with the knees first.
One thing to keep in mind is that when you have knee surgery, you'll be using crutches or a walker, which is going to put even more pressure on your shoulder. Getting mobile as soon as possible after knee surgery is CRITICAL to a good outcome! If your shoulder is too sore to support you as you move around, it'll only end up worse for your knee. Just something to consider! Good luck at your appointment. ((hug))bailey27 wrote:thanks both. the pain in my shoulder never goes no matter what i do.
