After reading all of your posts I've ordered a memory foam mattress topper for the caravan. We are going away for the weekend a week tomorrow so hope it arrives in time. We arent going very far and just for the weekend...its just a test to see how I am after my THR
Just thought I would let you know how your posts have helped

Please report back, I would be interested to hear of your experience. We did try a memory foam mattress when bed hunting a few years ago and we both loathed it. Now the arthritis is so much worse I am thinking of getting a topper to try to ease things. Have a lovely break - let's hope the sunshine stays! DD (in very sunny Suffolk)

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Hileena,

I agree with Speedalong it needs to be laid out flat for 12-24 hours before you can use it because it keep remembering it was rolled up

Hope you get it unrolled in time otherwise you and OH will be like two sausages in a sausage roll

    Hi Hileena

I got one for our caravan (when we had it - ditched it this season) as the matress there was terrible.

Ideally it should be laid out falt but i HAD to use mine the first night and I still noticed a huge inprovemnt.

    Hope it helps

Ousr did have a bed, but the mattress was -sort of soggy!.

Oh yes we ditched dthe van not the topper

Where is your van? Ours was at Devon Cliffs in exmouth but it was costing us (all told) about 7 and half thousand a year to run it  and the kids started to moan about going too

    Hi
Ours is a tourer ...just a 2 berth one now the kids have left home. So its close to home {costs £300 a year for indoor storage} we have thought sometimes of giving it up. As long as we make use of it during the bank hols and the odd weekend and usually we use it for one week in the summer its OK.....Pays its way LOL This one has come to Ireland with us on the ferry, gone to Norway as well so it is a good little thing

    Oh Hileena

    That sounds lovely.

I think we have talked about getting one when the kids get off to univesity..... a while yet though

It also means that you can lay your topper straight out when it comes :D

The costs are reimbursed with one good weekend arent they :D

    Hi Toni
We've always had a caravan of sorts.....well to start with when the kids were little it was a tent then we graduated to a caravan and they loved the freedom. We used to take it awAY during the summer and then hire a cottage in the Lakes or somewhere like that for a week in the Autumn.....but now they are up and away we tend to take it away most bank holiday weekends and 1 week in the summer. I cant take anymore than 1 week at a time now although with the new hip and the mattress topper you never know!!!!! Sometimes we take it away ion the autumn as well. Although its only a 2 berth one at least we have heating in it....so things are fine. All I have to worry about now is this topper coming on time LOL LOL

When you first unpack your memory foam topper there is a very strong chemical smell. This is normal and is called 'off-gassing' and the topper should be opened out to air, (and expand fully), for several days with a good air flow to clear it. Leaving windows open or putting in a garage should give it plenty of air.

While it doesn't have to be absolutely flat, (I spread ours over a large drying rack), it should be fully unrolled to expand properly and get plenty of air to both sides. I also turned it over every few hours until the smell started to clear.

For the first couple of uses you may get more off-gassing as your body heat alters the shape, so leave fully uncovered during the day. After about 2 weeks the smell should be totally clear and not return.

For some people smell is an issue and it's true that memory foam tends to smell like synthetic foam, although this quickly wears off. It's worth noting that the foam isn't releasing any toxic chemicals, it simply smells. http://www.memoryfoambedtopperuk.co.uk

    Hi Joseph
I dont know if it will arrive in time to be aired for several days. As for leaving it out all day for a few days when you first use it...........We are only going away for the weekend and that will defeat the purpose {well one of them} We wont have room in the caravan to leave it out or no room to sit down comfortably. I like the idea of it having straps and rolling up the same as a sleeping bag and being put away. I had thought about a continental quilt for underneath me but wouldnt have room to put that anywhere during the day so decided to splash out on this topper. Oh well will have to see.

    Hi Hileena

Enjoy your memory foam mattress topper - you should be comfy during your caravan break.

    Hi
Well it's Sunday evening and I'm back from the Lakes. 2 nights on the memory foam topper. I cant say I had 2 brilliant nights but they were better with the topper. The first night I was absolutely freezing....its not very warm at the moment anyway and it said not to lie on anything...just have something over you. Well the only sleeping bag I have that opens completely out is very thin but thought I would try that after hearing all the things about how hot they were.....like I say I was freezing. 2nd night I used it as a normal sleeping bag and that was much better, absolutely poured with rain during the night and that kept me wakened....clattering on the caravan roof LOL But on the whole it was much better than the normal bed. In fact I've brought it in to the house and I know its not very wide {caravan size} b ut am going to try it on the bed.
