I can't help (PA not in hips yet) but I do offer a message of sympathy. Other people will reply, I am sure, who can contribute more. I'm so sorry. Dreamdaisy
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

Hi Aquaman, have you ever had your hips x-rayed? Popping is often associated with dislocation/semi dislocation .... if that did happen you would REALLY know about it!!
Pain in calf could be referred pain.

    Definitely request an x ray.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi

I used to get this years back (i've since had replacements done due to my hip joints) but my popping I was told was caused by extra bone that had grown around my hip joint - they don't know why it had grown but it used to catch and cause the popping noise and feel.

Might be worth requestin xrays so that they can look into it for you and hopefully sort it.

Pain in your hips can often lead to pain in other parts of your body, because it changes the way you walk, stand, sit, etc. This puts stress on other joints, even your lower back, and voila - the pain seems to migrate. Muscles become inflamed and crampy.

Definitely get some x-rays to see what's going on. The hip joint angles inward toward the centerline of your body, so if you're feeling pain in what seems like your groin, that's your hip joint. If it's anywhere else, like the side or the back, chances are there's something going on in the sacro-iliac joints.

In the meantime, until you be examined, try sleeping with a pillow between your knees. Gentle exercises will help. A simple one is to sit in a straight-backed chair, flex your ankle so it's at 90 degrees, and slowly lift your foot until your knee is straight. Slowly lower it back to the floor. Do up to three sets of ten repetitions. It doesn't seem like it, but this will strengthen the muscles and support the joint better. Eventually, add 1 or 2 pounds of weight to your ankle.

I've had both hips replaced - actually the left one twice, because the first one worked so well I wore it out. :) It's major surgery, but it's life-changing and I'll do it again when and if I have to.

    Hi Auaman

    good to meet you :D

I agree with the others the best way forawrd has to be x-rays and tests. Early intervention is best.

    Take care

Not heard of that before - will store it in my brain for future reference.
