Hi Lynn
Fresh tomatoes do not like me! I still eat the home grown ones because they are so delicious but I do notice a change in my OA for a day or so. Perhaps it is because I eat so many of them.
Tinned toms etc do not seem to make my OA worse.

The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.
If you can lay down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone's day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day.

Hiya Lynn,
Does sound like there may be a connection - dare you go for a 3rd try???
I went to an accupuncturist who told me I wasn't digesting my iron tablets so would have to get more iron into my diet. I duly did what I was told (for once!) and ate steak and spinach every night, and really suffered with the RA. Stopped that and things became marginally less painful.
Also, during the time I was veggie my RA was in remission. Am by no means saying others should try it, but I do think my body behaves better when it doesn't have animal protein to break down.
Nothing to do with RA, but the palms of my hands get itchy and red when peeling tomato skins!

you think it was the red meat for you??
I will say when this first kicked off for m I had been swimming...rested and after a week it went so....went swimming again and came back worse....went swimming AGIN (was scared to go by now) and ended up 'stuck' for weeks.
Def blamed the pool but I now swim regularly and all has been well. So it honestly was coincidence

Hi Lyn,
I can't eat anything with tomato in it. My hands and fingers swell up something awful - and I love tomatoes. Ah, well. We can't have it all.

i have heard negative things about tomatoes but also potatoes and mushrooms. Somebody told me they stopped eating all 3 and their arthritis went away. I cant verify this cos there is real arther and imagined arther and dont think it works for me as I love potatoes.

Hi Lynn
let us know how the 3rd try goes.
i haven't found anything that makes the RA better or worse so far, it is just progressing randomly as far as i can tell.
my nan didnt eat tomatoes cos she said they made her knees worse, she had OA.
take care0 -
Hi Lynn,
I haven't noticed food affecting my bones at all but the IBD will not tolerate tomatoes be they raw, home grown, cooked tinned or in soup! Its enough to trigger a flare if you eat too many so they do seem to be a little less innocent than they pretendShame of it is they are nice.......
Food has never been proved though (it has with IBD especially crohn's) but since we are all different how do they know?
Go careful with the experimenting....... Love Cris who now wants a tomato so badly in an omelet with mushrooms (nother thing I can't tolerate just now) xx0 -
Hi Lyn
tomatoes can be the trigger to quite a few things ... some people find cooked tomatoes the worst and that they are still ok with uncooked salad ones (the acidity is altered by the cooking process) so if you are feeling brave - you could experiment ... if you wanted too! So it's cheesy pasta for now on then?

PS food intolerances often apply to food families - so worth investigating foods related to tomatoes!!I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Very interesting all this stuff about tomatoes. I love them, eat them virtually every day, mostly my own home grown fresh or frozen and when they run out I buy non-imported varieties when they are available.
Also I occasionally but locally raised beef and have heard the same thing about that RA-wise.
I discussed these things with my rheumatologist and he says there is no proof whatsoever that these foods influence RA.
I have had flares when eating toms, likewise I've had good painfree times when eating toms. :?0 -

i had pasta with tom sauce last night. No increase in R.A symptoms but I woke up in middle of the night with a massive headache and acid-reflux(prefer these two to R.A pain any day).
