Dear everyone
I have had an excessive cough for about 8 months together with loads of catarrah build up I feel that I am drowning in it. When I go to bed I feel that will choke, I have been given antibiotics galore but nothing helps I am on at the moment augumentin.
Has anyone had this problem of loads of mucous in their sinuses and if so can you tell me what helps. The consultant has told me to inhhale steam have salt rinses, up my nose but Iam so tired with coughing I had to sleep in my wheelchair last night because Iam too frightened to lie down in bed.
desperate for it to go Sue.
I have to go for a ct scan soon.

If it's lasted this long it sounds like an allergy. Sugar is well known for producing mucus, as are dairy products. You may have to try diet elimination to test this theory.
Another possibility is year-round rhinitis, like constant hay fever. It isn't only pollens that produce allergic results - moulds released into the air in low pressure weather systems can also have this effect. There are also grasses and tree spores that can do this.
Do you have a history of allergies? In the past I have spent all my time coughing and sneezing and dealing with loads of phlegm. It's miserable and I sympathise. Contact your doc to see if he can arrange for allergy testing. I hope you feel better soon. Dreamdaisy.Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Hi there,
I had severe sinusitis for a very long time and had to deal with loads of mucus too. I had loads of antibiotics etc but in the end the infection became so severe that the bone in my cheek became infected and they thought it would spread to my brain. I had a big op to sort it out and haven't looked back since. A cat scan showed the problem lay in the shape of my sinus cavities and nose so they rejigged everything inside and hey presto! My nose works!
On a slightly less extreme scale my sister in law had constant probs with her sinuses/colds etc and had an operation to 'clean' out her sinuses. She has had an end to her years of problems now.
I hope you find a solution to your problem, I know how horrible it can be.

Guaifenisen is the only thing that ever worked for me. Over here in the US I can get it anywhere under the name of Mucinex. It thins mucous so you can clear it out of your upper respiratory system easier.
Drink tons and tons of water, and use a small, portable humidifier especially in your bedroom at night. Like DD said, stay away from sugar and dairy until you're cleared up.
Herbs such as fenugreek and thyme can also help.0 -
I just want to add quickly that you can ask your chemist for a sinus douche (wash). My GP recommended them to me for a similar thing (although my cause is another condition). Now I simply use cooled boiled water to rinse out the sinuses but I really should use the proper sterile saline! The feeling is a bit weird but doesn't last more than a few seconds. It's like getting a gush of water up your nose when swimming. I was told to do this 2-3 times a day until the symptoms eased up. If you are willing to look into it speak to your chemist about it.
I hope you find a solution soon. It's truly miserable to go through for such a long time.

I use Sterimar, but it is expensive and cannot be prescribed. It does work for me, it helps considerably and I have had sinus problems all my life which I think are now being aggravated by the MTX.

I think all the above advice is really good, I just wanted to tell you I felt like that for a whole year with a cough that would never leave me and loads of mucus. I was always at the docs convinced I was dying it was exhausting. I was chatting to a nurse telling her about my symptoms and letting her know I was at the end of my tether, she asked what meds I was on and said it was the blood pressure tablet ( sorry I cant remember the name it was a few years ago) I asked the doc to change the tablets and felt better almost immediately.
Hope you find relief very soon

Hi, I'm glad you've solved your problem, as a heyfever sufferer, living in the middle of agricultural farm land, I can understand your problem! Love Sue0

I have had sinus troubles for years and years too. I find I often have to sleep sitting up otherwise feel I am going to choke.
Havent found a solution but keep a drink by my bed to keep throat comfortable when I cant breathe through my nose.
