There are various threads on here about them - I think you can do a topic search but I'm not sure how, I do not have that much technical knowledge. Try looking at some forum titles - that's what I do when I want info! Dreamdaisy

I have a foam mattress and think it is best thing ever. I also have a memory foam pillow too. I got the pillow first to try it out, and then got the mattress when I moved house. I love the way it moulds itself to my body and cradles my joints, but I know some people hate them because they can make it difficult to turn over. It's important to remember that memory foam mattresses come in different hardnesses just like other matresses. I went for a fairly hard one. Mine is an own brand from a bed shop, rather than the more expensive branded versions - they may be worth looking into.

I think the best advice is to try out as many as possible - don't be afraid of looking silly in the shop! - and maybe trying a memory foam topper or pillow first, to see how you like it.

There's a thread on the Chit-Chat forum on memory toppers at: http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/php/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15105&highlight=topper

Click your mouse on the link and it should take you directly to it.

Hi, I have RA and I bought a silent night one Maria and it was £200 - it definately helps a little, and is very comfortable. I'm not as achy when I get up in the mornings. I have heard the Tempra ones are fantastic but very expensive. x

Hi, I have a memory foam mattress topper, its comfortable and although at first I thought it might get hot in summer, its been fine. We had just bought a new mattress thats why we bought the topper, next time we buy a mattress it will definitly be memory foam! I also have a memeory foam pillow to help my neck and that works well too. It does feel strange when you first touch it and I thought I wouldn't like it but I'm a convert now!
I do know that some people don't get on with them, its like everything else, we are all different and the problem we have these things for is different so it is a gamble buying it.

Hope you sleep well! Sue

I know Tempur are expensive but don't they have a sixty-night policy? You can try it and, if not suitable, return it. Obviously a fee of some sort would be payable - it may be worth investigating on their website or talking to someone. I have a pillow - I've had it for four years now and I think it's hardening. Is that usual/possible? Dreamdaisy

hi Maria, I'm the same as Sharmaine - didn't need new mattress so bought a topper. bought middle price one - until OA got really bad made a massive interest.

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

I have a tesco topper on my bed, and it has been excellent for comfort and relief.

The only downside has been that it travels down the bed, and needs pulling up every few days.

I searched the internet, and found that a jersey sheet was good at keeping it in place. Lots of stretch so keeps it in place. (try ebay for good value)
I removed all other toppers and underblankets etc and it really works.

If you take if out of the cover it usually comes with, it does not move an inch, but it does feel different, I found, so try it.

Definatately a cheaper option if you have a mattress you like.

Found this out when I had to move into the spare room after my Hip repacement last month.

Coolmax memory foam mattresses are perfect if you have a small budget! They are reasonably cheap at £189! and have a special fabric that keeps you cool at night, best place for them is memory foam mattresses!

Hi I just recently purchased a new bed and we looked at the Tempra, yes alot of money !!! I just find foam beds make me sweaty, but it was fantastic to try as you just cannot tell if anyone is next to you, you can fidget as much as you like and not to disturb the other person.
I wasn't keen on the sinking feeling and when you roll over it takes a while for it to pop up and I didn't like the cradle feeling.. so mixed really.
If you like firm and snug then it might be worth having a look.
