Well after a fortnight of thinking that i have gout, my doctor tells me today that it may just be my polyarticular arthritis that is causing me grief......after trying various tablets that should work for gout, he now thinks it may be good old arthur. He said my uric acid levels are elevated, but not off the charts

so, he has now prescribed me prednisolone (steroids) for a fortnight - i go away in a month, so he wants to get me sorted fore my jolly hollies - what a nice man.

so my meds are now

3 x diclofenec (p.d)
3 x paracetamol (p.d)
3 x codeine phosphate (p.d)
1 x lansapranazol (p.d)

and for 2 weeks - 4 x prednisolone (p.d)

my question is multi layered (LOL)
1. is it a good pain reliever
2. will it help the psoriasis like other steroids do
3. after coming off the steroids how long before normality returns

cheers, chris

    Hi Chris,

i was on 6 per day for 3 months and they did their job in respect of the crohn's but they also kicked off a reaction and made all m long bones hurt..... just be a little careful but most people find them very good. Got so tired of feeling rough as soon as he crohn's was in its box i came off them. Think I stopped being so tired and having the bones and joints hurt in about 2 weeks but weather that means its worn off i that time I don't know.

good luck and i hope someone better answers you as well  Take care Cris x

Hi Chris,I was on Pred for 6 weeks last year starting with 8 a day and gradually reducing them and I found they worked wonders,no pain and stiffness while I was on them and when I finished them I was still virtually painfree for about 5 months. This year I've been on them for 6 weeks starting with a 6 a day dose and I finish them next week. This time I have noticed that now I'm down to one a day,a bit of stiffness has returned to one hand.I know it varys from person to person but I've had good results with them.My consultant won't let me stay on them for longer than 6 weeks.Hope they work for you. wow, this sounds very very promising

i am getting excited now (silly, but 3 months of hobbling takes its toll)

if the psoriasis goes too i can go swimming - yeah............i have started using a steroid cream/ointment for my psoriasis - called dovobet, which works wonders, but you can only use for 1 month in 6.......and, i have started going to the sunbeds too......they work well, as well.

    a new me......... :D

thanks for the info, it has really lifted me

I have been on pred for 3.3 years and I need to come off them. They do not reduce pain, they do not reduce the inflammation (I have PA) but they make me 'feel' better and they help mobility in a small way. I have a little more energy, that's all.

My blood vessels are breaking down so I am constantly bruised. My hospital is worried about osteoporosis (I don't give a damn) and I have piled on the weight thanks to these little buggers. They are fake friends to me - they make me feel brighter but it's a sham.

I went cold turkey on them just over a month ago and at the end of three weeks was tearing my hair out with rage, frustration and depression. I'm back on 2.5mgs, but I'm rationing myself to every alternate day. It's lousy.

If you can manage without them, do. They are nasty, insidious, evil little pills. Now I know why druggies do what they do - my preds make me 'feel' great, but it's temporary and fake. Dreamdaisy

sorry to hear your having such problems - i am on them for a few weeks, and a few weeks only - i cannot go on living the way that i am at the moment

i have had 2 tablets and i got to walk the dog and play in the play park today, for the 1st time in 3 months............a God send for me, whether or not it is short lived.

    regards, chris

That's almost the exact meds I've been taking for the last fortnight (No Codeine) and the only side effect I've found is a huge appetite. The pred's certainly helped my inflammation and diclofenac is an excellent pain reliever.

Stopped the diclo' now and am reducing the preds too as I don't want to be on them for too long.

You may wish to take something for your bones too if you're on pred's for a long time as they have a thinning effect.

no, my doctor only wants me on them for a few weeks, to try and help me get back to where i was 3 months ago......hopefully in the mean time they will be able to find out why my feet are hurting so much

if its NOT gout, what the hell is it...........he suspects it may be a condition which stresses the tendons in the feet

    we'll soon see

I'm not sure what you mean by 'how'. I've got fatter! Much fatter!

Two years ago, on the same sort of normal diet I'm on now, I weighed a little less than thirteen stone and was comfortably an M&S size 16. Now I can't shop in M&S, it's back to Evans (nearer sixteen and a half stone, size 22 - baggy fit, give it three weeks it will be perfect. I'm assuming you're female and will understand the bits I've just typed!)

And I'm very puffy. I have my five a day (all veg, loathe fruit), I have two eggs for breakfast (scrambled), I drink lots of water and tea (not coffee, don't like it) and I have cut out chocolate, cheese and wine and crisps to no avail. Still getting fatter, averaging about 2lbs per week. I eat very little in the way of processed food, I cook from scratch.

It's the steroids. I have a choice: thinner, lighter (still very painful joints tho - another myth peddled by docs, losing weight does not reduce joint pain) and not able to move, but LOOKING GORGE IN MY M&S STUFF - OR - steroids, fat, saggy, still in pain, unable to move, looking god-awful in Evans. Decisions, decisions, . . . . .

Either way, I'm still a sex goddess! DD

No, they haven't increased it - sorry, I didn't put that well at all, did I? I blame the ASO (arthritis symphony orchestra) which is pounding away at an extraordinarily a-tonal work at the mo!) I am eating at the same level I was in my thin days. There. Said it. Hurrah! Time for a cuppa! (no sugar) DD

Might not be gout after all :?:  Brilliant :D

Glad to hear the steroids are working - should be fine if you are not on them long-term. They are a bit of a miracle drug arent they but so not long term!

Enjoy your mobility and let us knwo how it goes

shouldn't do Chris if you watch what you eat. To be honest I dont know about you but someone I knew who had a brain tumour was on them (for a lot longer than you) and he DID have increased appetite.

10lbs is really good well done :)

cheers DD; the doctor told me that the teroid has no pain relief quality (at all), but it does have great anti-inflamitory properties, which i guess is what is holding me together at the moment

    take care, chris

I think that's where we came in cutie. There are various threads connected with weight issues - check back thro the forums by doing a search. I don't think I have anything new to add to what's been said. DD
