Hi All,

Do you find that now you have arthritis you eat more slowly than you used to?

No matter if it's a bag of crisps, sandwiches, soup or a plated hot meal I'm always the last to finish. People can start eating after me but at the end of a meal everyone's waiting for me to have my last mouthful. :| Why is this? Maybe it's the physical act of putting hand to mouth or does my jaw not function as it should, maybe I can't chew my food with as much force and so it takes longer ….but I just wondered if you're the same?

Everything I do now is at snail's pace, walking, writing, typing, chores, personal care and even eating ……although I still talk at ten to the dozen. Is it just me?

Luv Legs :D

Everything slows. I used to be a fast walker, a fast peeler of potatoes and carrots, quick to sort washing, quick when washing up, in and out of the shower in ten minutes flat (washed and moisturised). Those were the days my friend.

The only thing I can do fast now is drive, but there are too many morons on the road who like looking at the pretty green lights (I'm behind shrieking move dammit! move dammit!), or who don't know how big their cars are (you can fit a bloody tank thro that gap!) or they insist on driving at ten miles an hour UNDER the speed limit (aaaaaaaaaargh!).

    Hell is other people. DD

    Hi Linda.
I find I have to be more careful with everything now which means taking it slowly. I worry about tripping on tiny objects as cant step over things as well as non -arthritic peeps And I have to chew things well cos I have a problem with swallowing, dry throat. I can only carry a few things at a time so that makes everything take longer to finish.Writing is painful so can only do that it small stages at a time.

Now is your talking getting in the way of your eating!

I seem to be the odd one out here, as I eat fast and am conscious that I should slow down, sometimes. If I am talking a lot during a meal that is different. I cannot eat and talk at the same time too well.  I still can get things done fast, but I did used to be faster. When I am being paid to do cleaning jobs, I am most definitely speedy then!:lol:

I agree everything seems to take longer! With eating I get annoyed because my hand won't do what it's supposed to! And then the kids try to nick what's left on my plate! lol

I too eat slower now infact I do everything a lot slower than I used too, I do have problems with my jaw as I do tend to have flare ups in it. If my hands are not behaving then that is a problem too.

    Yep! me too....

So slow at eating that the food gets cold on the plate before I've finished...but it's due to arther in the jaw and my hands not working.

I am so fed up when everything (almost) I do now is at such a slower pace than even 6mths ago.

the only thing I'm quicker at is falling asleep in the chair (when I shouldn't)... can't sit still for longer than five minutes but I nod off!!

I tell myself that I have just learned the art of 'pacing' and that this tortoise way of life is doing me good in the long run! ha ha!!

at least we know we are not alone. :D

Since I was very small I always ate slowly - if at all, which drove my mother crazy!

I still tend to eat fairly slow. Which turned out to be a good thing, because now "experts" say that one of the best ways to lose/control weight is to eat slowly! Maybe that's why I never developed the severe weight problem that the rest of my family suffers.

I do everything slowly! I was rushing last weekend and fell and hurt my ankle. I have a fabulous yellow bruise now! It was a sure sign that I do need to keep my speed low. It's frustrating but ya gotta do what ya gotta do, right?!

Oh yes, I eat so slow, it's a nightmare, food gets cold, I get tired out eating my food. I have reduced my portion sizes because of it otherwise I am left on my own while everyone goes to watch tv. Nice of them eh? Eating is not enjoyed anymore, maybe the way forward is to drink instead.
    There's calories in that??
