Well the post today brought a Chest Clinic appointment for Wednesday morning next week. I knew it was coming cos the rheumy nurse mentioned that I would have to go to the BCG clinic.

I know they are checking the chances of my having latent TB before they give me one of the Anti-TNF treatments, but the letter makes it unclear whether I will definitely have the Mantoux test or not. :? :? :? Apparently if I do have it, then I have to go back again on Friday  to have the results checked. What a fun week!

Have looked at what the test involves and I'm not keen .... but needs must ...... just wondered if others could advise me if there are likely to be any more hidden surprises when I go!!

thanks
WOnky

    Hi wonky :D

Yes, you will have the Mantoux test as well as chest x rays..to test for latent TB and yep you will have to go back to let them measure the results! they will also do more blood tests so they have a baseline before starting the anti tnf.

what fun indeed!!! but good luck Wonky...hope it works well for you. Do you know which of the ant tnf's you're starting on?

I am on anti-tnf and I did not have this manwotsit test before I started. I had a chest x-ray already from when I started mtx. What is this test for?

    Hi Wonky

Glad you have your letter to get the chest xray done
and hopefully go forward to get the anti-tnf treatment.

I had the TB test done same day as my chest xray.
They injected under the skin of the forearm and a
week later nothing had happened to that area so
they declared me clear of TB, so its quite a simple
    procedure.

Other than that, there was just the blood test results
which with me showed a very high RF of 287 and the
ANA testing (antinuclear antibody test) I havent heard
about that yet as it had to be sent away apparantly.
I have my next appointment in 2 weeks time to see
how I am going with the Humira.

    so.................
Hope it works well for you Wonky.

    Let us know
    Love Kath

    Thanks Iris, Janie & Kath

Well I have had the chest x-ray (and hand and feet x-rays) in the last few weeks, so shouldn't have to have them again I hope!!

The rheumy nurse also did RF and ANA bloods, and also one for chickenpox, so that should be covered too. :D

So .... sounds like just the Mantoux test!

They are going for the Infusion for me - Infliximab (I think it is - all the names get a bit confusing!)

so .... busy week of appointments ahead ... have already had to rearrange my MTX injection to THursday cos that was to be Weds am too  and may need to see my GP on Monday for something else ..... so wonder what I can find to do on Tuesday to give me a full house :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

    Janie,
MY Rheumy nurse said that they test you for latent TB because the Anti-tnf treatment can 'wake up' any TB that is in hiding. but maybe they did something different for you that they didn't explain.

    I wouldn't worry about it!

Hi, I have had the TB test, Mantioux test that is, at school with all the rest. Its just a scratch on the arm thats nothing & you hardly feel anything. They check it after a few days, and if its negative, they give you the vacination. In those days all children had it at 13, but I don't think they do it as a a matter of routine anymore.

thanks for all your replies :D

Elizabeth - thanks for that info .... I'll be prepared in case they ask me to do similar tests .... don't have much puff myself at the moment so could be fun

Kath - well I think I'll let you know on that one  once I have met all the staff :lol::lol: Did I mention that I'm getting a new consultant? maybe you're onto something and I'll get a really dishy doc this time :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Cris - thanks for the hugs, slurps and good wishes .... you know I'll be leaning on you for your advice when the time comes!

Hileena - when I was at junior school they did the 6-needle test rather than this newer one and then we had the BCG jab before moving to senior school. I don't think they give it to everyone these days .... but I def had it cos I remember vividly having a lecture on why we shouldn't faint ... oh and the teacher gave us all a huge gobstopper when we had had the jab ..... she wasn't daft ... we hadn't any way of telling any tall tales to the ones still waiting cos our mouths were otherwise occupied!:lol::lol:

I'll let you know how it goes

    Hi
The Mantoux test is used all the time sin schools. I remember having this done before I had the BCG vaccination. It is nothing to worry about at all. From what i remember they out a pen type device against your forearm, tiny scartch and then I'm sure it it is visible / not. cant rememebr which, then you get the BCG vaccination.
