I wandered into my local co-op this afternoon, having been pierced by a blood-sucker at the hospital. I needed some cheering and saw they had Cadbury's Fingers (sorry, should read Kraft Fingers) on offer. Bought some, expecting to be transported back to one of the major delights of childhood.

I wasn't.

They're too small. I'm sure they used to be fatter, longer, just generally better. They didn't taste pleasant. I will not buy any more.

Peanut M&Ms however, are just about as good as I remember. They used to be called Treats and they were always lovely. Their modern-day counterparts are almost as good.

I really miss Texan bars, tho I suspect my teeth now wouldn't be able to cope. I loathed Opal fruits (they now have a silly name) but liked Black Jacks. Do these things ring any bells? A nostalgic DD

Wagon wheels, now they were definately huge when we were little, like wheels from a cart. Now, they seem teeny weeny, or I have just become a heffalump a080.gif
Star bars, I loved them, they stopped you from speaking, a bit like gob stoppers, which are probably banned now, due to health and safety. Oh and those sweets that were on elastic, like bracelets, violet cashews and cherry lips. Curly Wurly's were big too, when they first came out, now they are puny too, do they still make them?
I didn't like sherbert dabs, or those space things that fizzed in your mouth, like eating denture tablets.

My very favourites used to be chocolate macaroon bars, I only ever saw them when I went to visit my grandparents in Scotland so couldn't have them very often. I came across one a few years ago and bought one for nostalgias sake but it was soooooo sweet I couldn't eat it! Then my other faves were old english spangles, I really loved them and was very sad when they disappeared. Ahh happy carefree days. s0206.gif Brenda xx

Caramacs and Dime Bars. Scrummy. Loved the fizzy stuff in a sherbet dab, just hated the licorice. Yeeeeuuuuccch. I loved any fiizy sweet, still do as it happens, though my out-and-out favourties are Trebor Sour Cherry, hard-boiled red lumps of heaven. Have been known to have a whole tube in one go and thus wreck the roof of my mouth. A pleasurable pain. DD

Sweet tobacco in a waxed paper wrapping.

Niblets (type of crisp like fat, flat French Fries but much nicer)

    Sweet peanuts.

    Loved all of those :D

...but can anyone tell me why we used to buy bits of wood to chew and we all pretended they were great but they were really disgusting ...what was that all about? :?

My favourites are cherry lips, colts foot rock, Lions Midget Gems to name but a few. If you google 'a quarter of' you'll find a website that is devoted to selling 'old' sweets. Lots of lovely things that you can no longer find in the corner shop.

Hi ninakang, try Sainsbury's white chocolate, comes in whacking great slabs and tastes fab. Better than Milky Bar anyway, to my mouth. DD

So many things I had forgotten ... mmm!!!

We always had treats on Sundays ... Dad would give us all a lift to church - he would sit in the car and on the way home we would call by the general store and Mum would buy Dad a paper and my sister and I some chocolate. We loved revels - we always took one out of the bag each at the same time - and had to guess what it would be before we ate it - we loved it best when we both picked out the same one!! Little pleasures. Also loved iced gems as a treat ....

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

One of my lads turned up yesterday, enthusiastically sucking something. Eventually he finished it so we started work. At the end of the lesson he put his hand in his pocket and said 'Here you are, it's my last one, you have it.' I was touched.

I came down at 2.30 this morning, wandered around a bit then remembered I had a sweetie! For the life of me I cannot remember what they are called, but oh boy, it took me back. Hard-boiled, yellow, lemony with a fizzy bit in the middle. What are they called? Lemon drop? Sherbet lemon? Help!

I also remember barley sugar (ugh) and aniseed twists (OK-ish). But acid drops? Why? DD

i am sure they were called lemon sherberts.

My comics in order; Twinkle, Bunty (my favourite too), Shoot magazine(Yes always loved football)! My brother had Tiger magazine which I loved too.
Progressed to Oh boy, sometimes bought Jackie, N.M.E and then some music/fashion mag who name escapes me but bought the 1st issue which is worth a lot now!And every issue of Scootering and British Gymnastics and International Gymnastics magazines. One half of the attic is groaning under their weight.

Snickers have never been the same since they changed the name - Marathons were much nicer. I'm sure I've seen Lion Bars still around and, of course, Wispas have made a comeback.

The magazines I read as a teenager were Smash Hits and Just Seventeen :) My girls all get 2 magazines a month each and I still love to read the problem pages and embarrassing moments in each!
