What a night/day I have had.I woke at 1am with pain in my hands & wrists like ive never had before So I took my painkillers thinking that would help but no,my fingers started to curl & stiffen & stayed like that for at least 20mins.So I had no sleep.
I got up for work with a banging headache & feeling sick but off I went only to be there for 15 mins when the pain started my fingers were a disformed shape & my hands & arm are swollen to the max.So I was sent home.
Most of the day ive spent sleeping my hands are still sore & arms swollen with painful & hot joints.I have struggled to type this but I just
needed to tell someone.
Like someone said in another post it is like being on a roundabout, please please can I get off.
Thanks for letting me get it all of my chest

tjc123, once you're on this ride you're on it for keeps. Regarding your hands, if they are so hot what about resting them on a bag of frozen peas? I have various sized bags in my freezer, marked 'KNEE PEAS: DO NOT EAT'. Wrapped in a teatowel they do make a good source of coolth. Alternatively, sit with them in a bowl of cool water, that could also benefit. My hands have been steadily worsening for weeks, I don't wear my wedding ring now for fear of it getting stuck. It's the one pain that reduces me to tears, I know well the misery of it. Increase your painkillers, they do have a cumulative effect and that could also help. I am so sorry. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

hi what i recommend is rest as much as possible if it takes you a few days to recover just do what your body telling you, if you want to sleep then have a sleep as they do say its the best medicine in the world, and above all take care and keep posting when you can.sylvia0

hi, I am glad your work sent you home that is where you need to be. The sleep will have done you good. Give yourself a few duvet-days, take max painkillers as often as you are allowed and try those frozen peas - wrap you hand in a teatowel and then use a bag of peas on top and a bag underneath as you lie on your bed.
You are having a rough time on the roller coaster at the moment and though you can't get off, its peaks and troughs all the way ... and this is as rough as it gets and if you give your body some time (and don't rush back to work until you are ready) you will be peaking again soon and on a smooth run for a bit.

Hi TJC, sorry you are feeling so bad - and I can't believe you actually made it to work at all! As the other peeps have said, I'm glad that work sent you home - they could obviously see how unwell you are. Hopefully, knowing that, you will be able to rest up without worrying too much about work and that things will improve for you very soon. Thinking of you. Love Tilly xxx0

hi tjc - sorry to hear about what you are going through just now. this is exactly what happened to me at the weekend. my hands and wrists started ache, burn and swell with my fingers tightening (cramping) and clawing. i was sick as well and got sent home from work. had to abandon my car in the car park and get a taxi. the pain in my wrists was indescribable. anyway to cut a long story short i ended up phoning nhs24 and getting an appointment at night and they gave me strong painkillers and anti inflams. i also put my wrist splints on as they seemed to help. by sunday i was more or less back to "normal" pain and swelling levels. i havent tried the frozen veg yet but i find a nice warm bath and just let my hands float on the water, this is just bliss.
hope you get some relief from this soon and are able to rest. mx0 -
Thankyou all so much... today I feel a little bit better after taking painkillers & antiflams & a better nights sleep.Im just going to rest up all day today Im lucky I have a very understanding boss but my problem is giving in to it.

Hello,
I get very painful hands and they are always worse at night. I think that this is because we have them in the same position for quite a while. I've also been kept awake by a pain in my thumb, I know it sounds silly but it was horrible at the time!
Have you seen your doctor and an occupational therapist? They can make splints for you. I have working splints, but try and use them as little as possible as I want keep the muscles as strong as possible. They do really work for me and half an hour with them on in the evening, watching TV helps a bit.
I hope that soon you will find the right treatments for you. OT's also give warm wax baths to ease your hands.

Hi TJC - glad you had a better night's sleep - and really good luck at the rheumatologist.

Hello TJC
Did you have a better sleep last night? I hope so.
About 3 times a week I wake up with the mutant hands pain and it is an abosolute beggar! I take x2 Tramadol when going to bed so because I feel 'out of it' although I wake up lots throughout the night I fall back asleep again.
I never wear rings now as one night I had to go to AE Dept and have a ring cut off as my fingers had swollen like sausages.
Sometimes heat helps my hands and sometimes cold.
On the nights I can move my arms above my head I do so - must be something about reducing the blood flow.
Not much help to you however sending lots of encouragement to you and please just rest - don't worry about work.
Much positivity, Carol0 -

Hi Tjc
Sorry you're not very well right now.
My experience is different to others and I will say it does get better, we have spells of being in alot of pain but it's not always like that and sometimes the pain is very manageable and sometimes not always noticeable.
I think you need to listen to your body and rest, as you are doing. Your body is trying to control your arthritis at the moment so don't try to expect too much from it. You'll know when you're feeling better because you'll want to take up the reins again.
Just be kind to yourself and give your bod a chance.
Hope all goes well tomorrow with your Rheumy.

Hi TJC,
I am right with legs there and it does get better..... maybe cus you get your head round it better?
I am late I know but am glad to see you saying the tablets helped. Sometimes they say take them all the time even if there isn't much pain (I forget what that one feels like to be hones) but if they stop helping get a different pain management thing...... i went under the pain clinic and they have really helped.
Oh there is a post over on the CC for you as well but....
and hope it went well with the appointment? Luv and a ((( ))) Cris x0 -
Well ive been to see my rheummy & I have now been told I have fibromyalgia to add to eveything else.I have been giving a painkiller called Gabapentin which I have to start today but im sure the dose is wrong so ive rang the rhuemmy nurse to find out.
Anyone else on this?
tjc x0 -
Hi TJC,
I am on its next generation... pregabalin and for me they help so much though even after 2 years (well more now) I still get a bit high on the top dose.
Its to intercept the pain message and so your brain doesn't compute the pain you re feeling... I really hope the gabapentin works but if not... try the pregabalin.
Any new thing added in is horribly swamping but you will get there flower. Hang in there and hopefully the tablets will help.
A ((( ))) and he said he will be gentle with his bumps Luv Cris x0 -
my wrists are agony every morning from about 2 til i get up about 6;30, have no tried frozen peas or anything, just find some painkillers and a hot shower seems to work...
hope u ok
