hello

i am one of the ones that suffer in silence and just get on with it, but to be honest these last few days has been a struggle, having to use heat on arthur everyday, i am a tollerant person but this is getting to me, heat seems to help but cols makes it ten times worse, and those codiene phosphate the doctor gave me i had to stop taking them during the day i feel so doopy and strange, there's got to be something better surely, at this moment i am having a big battle with arthur and he being a right pain, :x :x  at least there is one thing my son is being wonderful and will help as much as he can, and i think he now understands about how i hate my arthritis and helps me to laugh at it by keep saying " who killed arthur " i just say it was me, i think in his own way he knows i dont like being like this, anyway going to find out what he can do to help, i'm going to ask about ultrosound/ Xray, if its is OA i need to know, last time i had an xray, was in 2008 and they said it showed early signs of OA but now its 2010 so it in my way of thinking got worse, i seeing the doctor at 4.10 which is a getting a bad time of the day for me as its starting to do its worse :(:(:( so maybe going at that time of the day wont be a bad thing, trying to keep fighting but need a little help.

sorry to be doom and gloom but i got to fight arthur some how.

    Hello only49

I hope it goes well at the docs this afternoon. It sounds as if you may need new bloods/x rays to see if your OA has got worse. I very foolishly kept putting off going to the GP and by the time I was suffereing from fatigue and my knees had seriously deteriorated.

Did they every give you any medication to help with the inflammation? Normally it's diclofenac. Be sure to mention that you're struggling. If it affects your sleep mention that too. You'll need to stay ahead of the pain to cope with everyday life.

This does get you down and you are right to share it with us - we've all been there. Your son sounds like an angel and if you have one member or your family supporting you during this then it makes life it easier to bear.

Sending you lots of cyber hugs (((((())))) and best wishes. Try and rest today. Where is your OA?

    With regards

Hi, I'm sorry that you feel so down and that the pain is really getting to you. We've all been there and know what its like for us, so you can rant on as much as you need to and get things out of the system! I know I do at times

I'm glad that your son realises what you are going through, it should make easier in some ways for you.

Pain is a funny thing (not ha ha funny) but it drags you down and makes you tired and scratchy, which makes the pain worse and so on with the visious circle. I hope that your doctor can help you, change painkillers or suggest something else, but remember, at the end of the day, we are here for you.

In a strange kind of way your late appointment with the doc will be a good thing because then he/she will see first hand just how rough things are. Don't put on a brave face, be honest. I think more Xrays is a good idea, I know it's a bit of a trek for you but things are worsening and pictures of it can only help to devise the correct treatment plan. Let us know how you get on. DD

    Hi Only49,

if late afternoon is a bad time for you - then it is a good time for the doc to see you at your worst.

There are lots of different combos of codeine tablets ... I used to be on solpodol 30/500 ... was told to take two at a time - and it was too much - I felt so dopey and spaced out. For ages I took just the one and one paracetomol. When my body got used to them I went back to GP and explained and they gave me 15mg tablets of codeine as well - so I could now take 45 mg of codeine and full whack paracetomol (one solpodol, one paracetomol and one 15mg codeine,) .... WAKE UP!! i've finished waffling on now!!

Explain to GP how tablets make you feel, enquire about anti inflammatories and request uptodate x rays and an ortho referral.

Write your list of questions and what you want to say, so you are prepared for the appointment - let us know how you get on.

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

    Hi Only49

    Good luck today at doc.

Don't put on a brave face.

When I was still working and able to afford to pay for private consultant he only took me seriously when I went on one of my bad days and every joint invented was swollen - that was when he started action.

Oh I am so sorry. You don't want to hear that, do you? Nobody does. Your name gives away your age I think: when you are feeling calmer see if you can find out at what age they would consider a TKR. Are both knees the same or is one worse than the other? Oh I am so sorry. DD
