Hi, Some of you will remember I asked if anyone had a rash while taking MTX.Mine was on both arms and my GP told me to stop taking the drug until I had seen the rheumy nurse.Well I saw her on Monday and also saw the consultant who told me he didn't think the MTX caused the rash.Hower,he has dropped my dose from 15mg to 7.5mg and the Folic Acid to two instead of three. If the rash returns on the lower dosage I have to let the nurse know.I'm supposed to see the consutant again in Aug. but there appears to be no free appointments until Dec. so at the moment my appointment with him is in limbo.I usually see the rheumy nurse at my local hospital but this time I had to go to a hospital 17 miles away as there was no appointment at my local hospital.Shows how bust the rheumatology dept is!! Breane.

No, it shows how busy they are, which is an entirely different thing! At least he's reduced your meds and the rheumatology nurse can advise further if neccessary. Fingers crossed the rash goes and the meth does something to help you. Oh, and keep out of the sun. I have meth sun rash, not pleasant.

The rheumatology department is the fatest-growing dept. at my local hospital, evidenced by the fact it now has three separate sections. What I find astonishing is that it shuts up shop on Friday lunchtimes. Closes completely. A whole afternoon lost for what reason? Some little middle-management pen-pusher somewhere has decreed this, no doubt, but they could stay open, see some patients, they could shift another eight or so per week at least, and thus reduce the pressure on themselves a little. I also think week-end clinics would be a good thing too but now I am in la-la land! One can only be ill, Monday to Friday, between the hours of eight and five. But illness doesn't know this. DD

When S was being diagnosed with epilepsy he had an MRI scan appointment for the evening ... evidently the scanner had been broken, the hospital was behind it's government deadlines and were operating the scanner virtually 24 hours a day ... 7 days a week to catch up. The staff seemed quite happy about it ... because I expressed my curiousity as was this the normal service and we got talking .... (no surprise there then!!)

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

My hospital hit the headlines a couple of years ago as they decided to open up their MRI scanners and top-of-the-range Xray machines, at the weekends, for VETS to use on flaming cats and dogs. There was a huge outcry from the general populace who were awaiting appointments, some for months, and the idea was dropped. If they could open for animals they should have opened for people, surely, but that would mean staff having to work on a Saturday, and needless to say, no-one wanted to do that. DD (who has worked countless Saturdays and Sundays in her time, often for people in the health service!)

Hi Toni,Yes,we've been back to the van,had four days there last week. Beautiful weather but I couldn't stay out in it much due to the itchy rash.We try and get there every third week, going on the Fri. afternoon and coming home Sun. evening.Do you still have your van? We've got a weeks holiday there in July so hope I'll be sorted by then. The cream has definately helped the rash so fingers crossed the lower dose of MTX will work. Breane.x

Hi Breane, just read this post and glad to hear that the itchy rash is definitely reducing now. Hope it continues to get better and that the Mtx works for you at the lower dose.

    Hi Breane

Regarding your waiting time for next appointment .... my last Rheumy appointment was April and the next one they can give is January!!!!!!

So I agreed with them that from July I will keep calling them trying to grab an appiointment that has been cancelled by someone else. Meantime, if I get no luck I am just going to go to the department and sit and wait.

Maybe an idea to grab a cancelled appointment?

    Good luck, cArol

I had mine changed back to June (tomorrow actually) after getting one for November! Just tell them the wait is unacceptable. The only prob is i am being squeezed in between 2 other appointments so probably wont have a lot of time to chat but as I have had R.A for 10 years I really only want an opinion on a couple of ongoing joint probs.
    Hope you have some luck.
