I lost count of the diagnoses I had before they settled on PA. There are different forms of arthritis, they manifest in different ways and there are also other issues associated with joint pain and damage. It is a minefield, and I am not surprised you feel confused. I began my problems in 1997 and wasn't diagnosed until 2006. Even when diagnosed the confusion doesn't necessarily go away.

The MRI will give a very clear image of and damage and swelling, and it's a painless, easy procedure (there's a thread on it somewhere around here). Try not to fret too much - you are in the system, they are trying to discover what is going on, but it does take time. Sometimes a long time. DD

Yep, I agree, diagnosis are just something that doctors and consultants like to give out like sweeties!

Don't worry there are plenty more just round the corner, I got quite a nasty tasting one a while back but it wasn't long before another came along.

At the end of the day, they just don't know. We can take a picture of a particle, fly to the moon, make fusion, travel the world in 90mins, stop malaria but we can't diagnose which type of arther we have and thats that!

    Hi Rosy

I do hope you get to the bottom of this and fast.

I HATE it when they make us feel like fakers :x :x :x

There will be a reason for the pain - he may well ahve meant not the type of arthur he was expecting - MRI will be far more usefull I think.

    Youtatke care

Just a thought, the Rheummy Consultant fella, they only treat RA type arther, not OA which is degenerative but not inflamatory.

As I've pointed out to others, OA is not generally treated by Orthopedics either unless you want something cut off, replaced or smoothed...... :?

So most OA sufferers are stuck in the middle of the two types of treatment and neither apply.

    Keep smiling

HI I'm pleased you feel better and glad you've spoken to the doctor. I have had lots of tests and what not and I've been around most of the depts in the hospital, I feel quite embarressed when they look at my notes!

I think, like a lot of things, its all to do with a lack of communiction. Things just don't get explained and we get rushed through without having any real discussion. I think its a personallity thing. I saw a doctor on Tuesday, Plastic Surgeon, who operated on my carpul tunnel and he explained quickly and easily why I'm having the pain and what the options where and let me decide the next move. For the first time I felt really in control. It was quick easy and pleasent.

I hope he teaches med students!

I'm glad e rang you back and explained things better. The MRI is quite straightforward - have you had one before? There's info about it somewhere around here or if you like I can describe it for you - I've had three on my knees so far. DD

It's noisy, that's all. They give you headphones to deaden it - some swanky hospitals even play music to you! I forgot to check back far enough but I think it's a knee, or both, that's being done? You lie on a bed, they place your knee in a holder that will keep it still, then feed you into the big doughnut of a machine. You stop being fed in just as your nose gets close to the outside. They will do a number of scans, each scan makes a different noise and it takes
about 5 mins per scan. YOU FEEL ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. My feet always get cold so I ask them for a blanket: if they refuse I point out that me shivering isn't going to help matters!

It really is very easy, rosyred, no need to worry about it at all. My hospital goes thro a series of questions on a checklist before they begin, checking whether you have a pacemaker, any metal piercings or joints etc, then off you go. The first time for anything is daunting - I remember that feeling well! I've had three, all very easy. Try not to fret too much - easy to say, I know! There's a thread somewhere from someone who was in your position fairly recently - she found it a doddle. DD

    Hi,
I've had a few MRI's.......you lie on your back ..it is noisy like DD said....I got ear defenders but no music but I know some do.
You are fed into this thing holding on to a buttpon that they say to press if you need to come out or need help but my attitude was that if I press that button I'm going to have to do it all over again!!!!!!
To be honest I dont know how long I was in.......but thats it....no pain, no nothing.
I have so much metal now I'm not sure they would do another one on me LOL

    Hi Rosyred

Once they get the results of your MRI you'll know what's wrong with you. Often doctors mention things that mean something to them but nothing to us!

I hope you get a diagnosis soon so that you are treated accordingly.

    Keeping fingers crossed for you.

    Regards
