post-op scar

Hi,
My hip op scar is between 20-30cm long and starts along the middle of a scar I had from an op in childhood. This scar is very wide and thick as I grew as it was knitting together. The new scar carries on above this scar too.
Since 3 weeks post-op I have been using bio-oil twice daily as recommended by one of the nurses. I did a small test area first as I'm often allergic to things and was fine. It has really helped relieve the pulling feeling around the scar.
Last night used bio oil as usual, only difference being I massaged it in more thoroughly than usual (so maybe used more?) At bedtime the area was red - a bit like mild sunburn - and felt warm to the touch. It also felt more tender - but that could have been psychological?
This morning the red area is smaller and it is a little less red and less warm. I showed the nurse/care assistant who comes daily and she confirmed - see how it goes it no better or indeed worse go to docs tomorrow ... can't help worrying though. Fingers crossed I'm doing so well, I don't want any setbacks ... too complicated with S etc ...
Anyone else had this - might be part of the healing process?? Reaction to bio oil?? Rather than a dreaded infection??

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Hi Speedy,
I know be very worrying but it doesn't really sound like infection and more likely its the reaction of the oil. Did you use a different brand?
I really hope its got a bit smaller and it is gone very soon. For what its worth my back scare that is horribly wide and 6-7 inches long didn't have oil at all and its made a good recovery so a few days off the oil shouldn't make yours pull/feel tight to much cus I think in your shoes I would leave the oil for a few days. Luv and a ((( ))) Cris xx0 -
Hi Cris,
thanks for that. The reddened, warm area is gradually reducing in size. The oil I was used was from the same bottle - only difference was the way I rubbed it in more and maybe used more ..
It does feel a bit sore or maybe I'm more conscious of it today ?? Will definitely stay off the oil for a bit. Typical, the first bottle I bought was a small one ... as didn't know if it would suit me/make a difference ... just bought a bigger bottle ready and waiting ...

Hi Speedy
I had to use bio oil when I had a mole removed from my face, and the same thing happened, I didnt know if I had rubbed to hard, I went on to use baby oil and it was fine.
Hope this helps you
Take care

Thanks Barbara, I did wonder if baby oil would be gentler. It is still sore and looks redder again this evening. Have just made up some saline ... waiting for it to cool before I apply it.

Hi Speedy
Have only just logged on today and seen your message ...
It does sound like you have rubbed it in too hard/too long... I only used a moisurising cream once, about 2 weeks ago, and it seemed to make it rather more sore..
The whole area around my scar is still a darker colour than the rest of my thigh, but I am just putting that down to the 'disturbance' to the tissues/skin...
My scar was very itchy on Friday and Saturday.. but the area isn't warm and I am certain there isn't an infection..
Will you let us know how yours is tomorrow??

Thanks Lyn, don't think I'll put anything on it except bathe it with saline as a precaution and see how it goes. Once it settles down, will take a peak again at your suggestions.
Hi Marion, mine went through an itchy phase - but that was awhile back when it was still scabby! (mmm nice!)
It is sore and tender tonight and I'm being really careful S doesn't brush up against it ... if it isn't any better in the a.m. I'm going to the docs ... because I'm taking any risks ...

Hi, Sorry you are having problems at the mo. I used good old E45 cream on my scar, which I'm sure helped the healing. We are all different though, and better to check with your doc then be worried. Take care, Josie x0

Hi Speedalong
Perhaps you rubbed/massaged the oil in for too long and more aggressively that you have done prevously.
I was not recommended any particular moiistriser, oil for my knee scars. Vaseline was sort of suggested by one person but I was told anything will do, it is as important massaging the scar as to what you put on it.
Perhaps you should stay off the bio oil for a time. I use that on my knee scar now but I also tend to use anything that is to hand. I do this twice a day. I had my op 29 January.
I hope it soon clear up,
Luv

Hi thanks Josie - I do have E45 cream at home.
Hi Elna - The only thing I did different was the massaging ... and maybe used more oil? I think the scar is getting nothing applied and no massaging for a bit ... as I was doing it - it felt fine!! (it could have said ouch or something!!)
Feeling less worried ... must be the glass of wine I had with dinner ...

hi speedy i have been using the bio to and now you mention it my knee or at least the scare area has felt very tight after for a while will give it a miss for a couple of days i hope it is just the bio for you that is the priblem and not an infection xI know i am a lady ,all life is a journey xx MAY xx0

Thanks Berty, how long after your op did you start using it? My Dad seems to think my sister was told 4 to 6 weeks ... but she is working long hours and hasn't been in touch yet. I began at 3 weeks, but there's nothing in the leaflet about having to wait ... jut about not using on unbroken skin ...
My scar is no worse than yesterday morning ... shall show nurse/assistant when she comes.
