hi Deborah,
I take fish oil, evening primrose and rosehip. I felt the Rosehip really helped while I was waiting to get into the system.
Hope this is of some use.

Hi, Remedial sports massage really helped with the aches and pains in my muscles resulting from arther joints ... also aromatherapy oils in the bath ... for relaxing and inflammation and mediation CDs ... Alternative therapies in the broader sense.
SpeedyI have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.0 -
Homeopathy - fine, if you've nothing wrong with you, just like to think you have.
Sports massage - hurts like hell but does get rid of some of my PA swelling.
Diet: no difference.
That's my experience so far! DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
I have RA and would have loved to find a holistic way of treating it.
I had reflexology which worked for a day or two relieving some pain and stiffness in my feet but was too expensive to have more and now ive had to give up my job I cant afford it at all. I would recommend it if you can afford it.
I have had acupuncture for migraine 8) which worked almost instantly but again too expensive to continue with.
I already have a limited diet due to food intolerances and it makes no difference.
I cant take any of the oils due to the above
Apple cider vinegar again nothing at all but did give it a really good go .
I know where you are at as I hate taking all these meds as most on here do too. I have spent a fortune on miracle 'cures' after family have dumped literature on me 'this is proven'to work , yeah right!! I now have light pockets and cupboards full of c**p x
Im not saying dont try as some things work for others but be wary, I think Im very cynical(and poor  ) now.
Good luck with yours x

Hi Deborahjane
Just a word of caution - you do have to be really careful what, alternative pills and potions you take if you are taking prescribed drugs because some can have really serious interactions - can increase the effect of some drugs to a toxic level and can stop some working at all.
I do vitamins, fish oil etc but nothing other than that.
In the early days of RA I sort of tried the "Mary Hills arthritis cure diet" but I made myself poorly- was the bathing in strong epsom salts that did it I think - so gave up on that pretty quick!
That said, I really do believe that eating as healthily as you can can only be a good thing and I have read a very interesting book called "8 weeks to Optimum Heath" by Dr Andrew Weils. I don't believe for a minute that eating well will cure RA or any other type of arthritis but the book is very good at explaining the body's nutritional needs and gives some good recommendations.
Me - can't say I follow this advice - living on caffeine, chocolate and toast and Marmite at the moment! But needs must!!!!

Hi Deborahjane
I was diagnosed with RA and then rediagnosed with SLE (Lupus) and yesterday started a Lupus Recovery Diet which initially is low fat, vegan and wholefoods and then once I have stabilised my body then reintroducing fish, chicken, dairy etc. Alot of people say that it has helped their ARthritis so as it is healthy eating anyway I am giving it a bash!
Re Alternative stuff - I used to suffer with severe migraines and found Reiki relaxing - think it was 'cos I was forced to lie still for a while! Acupuncture has no effect on me.
Good luck, Carol0 -
I tried accupuncture. It didn't work for me but I got it free on the NHS so nothing lost!0

(going to try fish oil capsules see if they make any diff to stiffness.)0

Remember to persevere when taking fish oils etc as can take a while to take effect0

Hi Deborah
I had a steroid injection in my wrist once and it worked brilliantly.. but you have to rest it for, I think, 24 hours ,for it to be really effective, so be careful if you are planning to drive home afterwards ...
The injection did make the skin around the injection site 'thin' for quite a long time afterwards, but it was only noticable to myself and it has 'plumped' out again now...
Hope it works for you - it took all my pain away and I was able to open windows and dry my hair afterwards..

how long did it last before getting painful again, i have had injections in my feet before that helped, the last one i had was in top of leg,as i had several joints playing up.this didnt seem to do a lot. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)0

Hi Deborah,
Good luck with your appointment and I really the injection will help. I have my neck done regularly with big jabs (medrone into the myelin sheath) and top up trigger points of cortisone every 10 or so weeks and they really help. They are done by the pain clinic and I am lucky that ours is so good.
I have had them in the elbows and knees and long ago I had my knees drained and injected regularly and that did help but the last ones were not so good. SA lot of it depends on if they get the right bit..... I hope to have my wrists cortisoned next week.... figured if she is doing my trigger points she might do the wrists
On the other alternative front I think I have tried most things and brought all manner of things as well. Do they help? I have no idea but most wont do you harm.... Let s know how it goes and really hope it helps. Cris x0 -
thanks for reply.i have heard they dont like to give you too many jabs cause they can make your bones crumble.i suppose its just another side effect as with everything.deb0

Hi Deborah,
Yep I see people saying so many a year and yet...... :shock:I have 5-6 trigger points every time I see her. I also have had knees, elbows and shoulder done in the same hit all with cortisone. The big jabs she doesn't do very often (2x a year roughly) They are very different and if I am lucky they also do a temp de-nerving in my neck and its bliss
I wonder if you might find a referral to the pain clinic useful? Ours is good but i know others haven't had a good a time but its worth go maybe? Good luck anyway and let us know please? Cris x

Long-term use of steroids can contribute towards osteoporosis (bone crumbling) but then so does being alive and being female. There are meds one can take to prevent this if taking steroids: I have a weekly dose of alendronic acid to (hopefully) prevent it, plus chewy calcium and Vit D tablets too. I forget to chew them tho! It's designed as a jolt for the whole body. Make sure you get at least 24 hours complete rest so that you gain the most benefit from it. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0
