Hello everyone
I have started to have mtx by injection because the tablets were making me so ill, the problem is, I have to go to the hospital every week to have it. I rang my GP surgery today and they refuse to give it to me there because 'they haven't been trained'.
I cannot do the injection myself, and i'm trying to hold down a job as well as having a family to look after, the hospital only holds the clinic on a Tuesday morning when i'm supposed to be at work (I work full time) so it puts me in a very difficult position. Does anyone know if there are any other options?

Hi Kerry
Sounds as if your GP is just being plain awkward to me! In terms of being trained - it is no different from any other injection - and it can't be that difficult otherwise we mere mortals wouldn't even be allowed to try to do it ourselves! My GP always did both Gold and Methotrexate for me with no quibbles.
If they mean they don't understand the methotrexate, then surely it is up to them to speak to the rheumatology dept to find out about it, in the same way as if they were asked by a specialist to administer any other drug.
Could you speak to the rheumatology dept and ask them to explain to the GP what they need to do? Cos you don't need any more hassle, things are hard enough to cope with anyway.
Or, as you can't do it yourself, is there someone else who could do it at home for you, to save the hassle? (I know I wouldn't let my husband anywhere near me with a needle - only joking) but it might be a way round it for you.
Good luck!

Hi Kerry
I had the same problem - I went to the hospital methotrexate injection clinic for 12 months, but then got fed up with the travelling and as my GP couldn't offer this service I decided to have a go at self-inejction - and have been doing it now for about 12 months with no problem..
The syringes are delivered, ready made up with my 15 mgs of methotrexate, to my home or my office every 12 weeks ..
Best wishes

My hospital won't allow me to do it myself, despite extensive experience of self-injection. They brew it in vast vats up there on a Monday, I go every Wednesday. It's the most irritating aspect of this whole lousy business. Luckily for me, however, I am self-employed so I can fit work in around it. Surely your employer should allow you some time off every week for treatment that might help you be a better employee. Oh no, I fogot, that's in cloud-cuckoo land! Talk to your boss or the HR people, see what they say. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Kerry
Sorry - didn't realise that mtx injections was not something all GPs will do. It may be that I was just lucky with miine. Still, it might be worth getting someone from the rheumatology clinic to speak to your GP to see if they can persuade them to do it for you because it would make it so much easier.
It could just be the GP not wanting to be involved because they don't prescribe the mtx. I certainly encounterd this lack of "joined up thinking" with Humira.
Hope you do manage to get something sorted.
