W-hey!!!

Ran out of posting time yesterday!!! To say and share my news - received a letter from the hospital to say that my 6 week follow up appointment and check up for my hip op is now next Thursday!!!! That is 6 weeks and one day after my op (instead of 10 weeks post op.) Hopefully only one more week on TED stockings to go ... though wont hold my breath about other restrictions .... Looking forward to seeing x-rays - haven't seen them yet.

Yippee ...

It is worth being calmly assertive!!!

    Hi Speedalong

Glad to hear your appointment has come through - almost for the correct date!!

How is your distance walking going?

I am managing my 30 minutes round trip to my local high street most days . 6 weeks post-op for me tomorrow - but still need two crutches and my leg/ankle still swells up a lot during the day.

Have had a few worrying 'twinges' in my new hip recently, not related to walking, but think I might have inadvertently twisted or bent too far - and of course I am sneezing huge sneezes with hayfever which are not helping ...

    Best wishes

    Hi Marion,

I go for a walk on our estate each week day. I use one crutch (physio's orders.) Each day I walk as far as the last day plus a bit more ... each day it takes me 20 mins ... so I must be walking a little further and a little faster each day! I don't have any "spring" or "bounce" in my step yet ... but I am walking without any real pain. I'm concentrating on my technique as walking with both hips in their sockets is a novel experience. I don't feel like I'm limping (with the crutch) but my shadow says otherwise ... when I finally make it to the shops I will be able to look in the shop windows and see properly how I'm doing!!
I am managing my 30 minutes round trip to my local high street most days .
    That sounds great to me.
6 weeks post-op for me tomorrow - but still need two crutches and my leg/ankle still swells up a lot during the day.
Do you use both crutches in the house too or just on the high street?
My knee is still swollen - my ankle and lower leg have no hope of swelling whilst I'm wearing these tight TEDS ..
Have had a few worrying 'twinges' in my new hip recently, not related to walking, but think I might have inadvertently twisted or bent too far - and of course I am sneezing huge sneezes with hayfever which are not helping ...
I get various twinges and sensations too ... and some clunking when I do physio exercises which involve swinging the leg forward. My biggest challenge is developing my core stability. Because my hip was semi dislocated for so many years - I'm used to have a wonky trunk and feel "unnatural" sitting up straight and finding sitting unsupported very tiring.

S and I are sneezing and snuffly - could be a summer cold or hayfever?

When is your next appointment at the hospital?

Hi Elna - still wearing the ruddy things 23 hours and 50 mins a day!! (only respite when nurse comes to wash my feet and change the TEDS.) Can't wait to get rid of them - especially at night ...

    Hi Speedy

Sounds like you are doing really well with your distance walking..

I am going to the podiatrist tomorrow at the hospital so that will be a trip in the car and a longish walk round the hospital - so I will be able to compare how I do to the way I felt last week when I went for blood tests!! Oh how varied and interesting life is (not) at the moment!!

I am supposed to be on 2 crutches for at least 6 weeks, but round the house I sometimes use just one (cos of carrying things!) - but I can 'feel' my new hip more when I just use the one..

I can only imagine how awful it has been for you to wear those TEDSs stockings all this time, but then again it sounds like they have kept your leg/ankle swelling down ...

My follow-up appt is not until 10th AUgust (ie 3 months) - I expect to me back in work by then though!! - if the Occup Health doctor will let me go back that is ...

    Best wishes

    Hi Marion,

Hi, tell me why you are seeing a podiatrist. I think I need to see one to improve my gait my new hip foot turns inwards a bit .. and my insole for my leg length disrepancy is I reckon done to my old measurements and not my new ones ...
I know what you mean - trips out in the car are a big treat for me too!!
I am supposed to be on 2 crutches for at least 6 weeks,
    Interesting. Do you know why?
but round the house I sometimes use just one (cos of carrying things!)
That's why I started walking with one ...
    - but I can 'feel' my new hip more when I just use the one..
I know what you mean - but I cheat with two - ie take a lot more weight on the crutches and swing a little ...
I can only imagine how awful it has been for you to wear those TEDSs stockings all this time, but then again it sounds like they have kept your leg/ankle swelling down ...
They are diabolical ... especially in bed at night .. but a clot would have been worse .. and I did give up injecting the clexane early ... after doing my own research ... I was on the dose and period of time for some one bed bound after surgery .. Talkabout over kill!!
My follow-up appt is not until 10th AUgust (ie 3 months)
And is that your first one?! No nothing until then?!
    - I expect to me back in work by then though!! - if the Occup Health doctor will let me go back that is ...
Wow... I'm not risking going back at 3 months!! Remind me what you do?

    Hi Speedalong

I have been having regular appointments with the Podiatrist for some months - I just have basic treatment - I think they are being very kind keeping me on their books really - I have had some troublesome verruccas on both feet and they were keeping them in check prior to my operation (to make sure I didn't get an infection)... plus they also check my in-soles etc..

Not sure why I have to stay on 2 crutches for at least 6 weeks (and then it will be one crutch for another 6 weeks until my out-patient appt) - my new hip IS 'weight bearing' (compared to my old hip w hich certainly was NOT weight bearing. The hospital seems to give all hip patients a 3 month follow-up - and I gather it will be with a specialist nurse, not the consultant..

I'm impressed with how organised you are about improving your walking style, etc, Speedalong.. I will have to think about that too.. at the moment though, I catch sight of myself in shop windows and even on my 2 crutches I look so much better (and younger) then I did before the op when I was on my 2 sticks and had to stop every few yards!!

I work in a University and my job is moderately sedentary so I am hoping I will be Ok to return at about 10 weeks - if I was a teacher or a nurse or a policewoman I would certainly need longer than that though...

    Best wishes

Thanks for answering - my toe nails are so long now ... maybe if I went for my insoles they would cut them too ... I can't hang on another 6 weeks ... and it isn't something I could really ask my long suffering friends to do ..

At least it isn't bothering you using both crutches ... if it was you could always have rung up for advice ... Maybe they like you to keep them for safety and balance. The thing about this op is the hospitals have developed protocols - for 80 year olds and they aren't used to adapting them for younger things like ourselves.
The hospital seems to give all hip patients a 3 month follow-up - and I gather it will be with a specialist nurse, not the consultant..

Marion you sound as if you are doing great with your walking. Do you buy things or window shop? And if you do buy things how do you carry them?
I work in a University and my job is moderately sedentary so I am hoping I will be Ok to return at about 10 weeks - if I was a teacher or a nurse or a policewoman I would certainly need longer than that though...
Ahh - sounds interesting. Uni campuses can be big though ... how will you cope with all the walking? Will you ask for phased return?

When I had my first hip done, I went back earlier than I intend to this time because I was in mainstream then - I went back on crutches! But no way could I go back early to special school - it is just too physical.

    Hi Speedalong

I might do a little bit of shopping when I am doing my distance walking.. we have an M & S Simply Food on the high street so that's always tempting! I have a largish cross-body bag. I don't buy anything heavy though..

People at work were used to me struggling to get around the campus, so if I was needed for a meeting, it had to be held in my building! We have a very good Disability Support Office (who I only made contact with a few weeks before my op) and they are organising a workplace assessment for a special chair, etc, for before I go back. I will go back on a 'phased return'. I have also got some funding for taxis to work from the 'Access to Work Scheme ' for the occasions when I might not be able to drive my car. Can't complain really!

I am wondering when I can go to the hairdressers - what would your advice be? I don't know if learning back over the basin is a good move.. sorry - this seems so petty. given the difficulties some peeps have...

Well, it's nearly 1 00 am and I have got 2 (neighbourhood) cats chasing each other over the roof of my sun lounge ...which in turn has set my dogs off barking frantically - I won't be popular with the neighbours tomorrow!!

    Hi Marion,

I have been wearing my shoulder bag across my body - I usually have it hanging over might right hip - and it feels really strange now I have switched it to the other side ... As I haven't walked to the shops yet, I just put the shopping on my scooter. (Still can't fit much on it!) When walking around shops - I use a carrier bag to put my stuff in. Make a big show of what I'm doing - so I don't get arrested for shop lifting!!
People at work were used to me struggling to get around the campus, so if I was needed for a meeting, it had to be held in my building! Sounds all very organised. Can I send my boss along he might learn a thing or too!!

Of course it's not petty. I think you will be fine - you won't be breaking the 90 degree rule ... leaning back is fine. Just be careful if it is a swivel chair and that they set the chair high enough for you.
Well, it's nearly 1 00 am and I have got 2 (neighbourhood) cats chasing each other over the roof of my sun lounge ...which in turn has set my dogs off barking frantically - I won't be popular with the neighbours tomorrow!!
Make sure you have a conversation real or imagined with someone tomorrow in the garden about the cats setting off the dogs in a loud enough voice for your neighbour to hear!!
