hello

does anyone know how you go about applying for vat exemption for example if you buy something you need to make life a bit easier, thinking about buying something to help get my shoes and socks on etc.

When I have bought items from a 'disabled' shop, ie one which stocks only gear for us special people, they automatically give me a form to fill in and /or sign. General shops do not do this in my experience. I hope you are well today. DD

Whoever you buy off has to have a form signed by them and you for VAT exemption. Not everything that you buy is exempt, only HM Revenue and Customs can make the final decision.

Most suppliers of Disability Aids are well aware of the regulations and can offer guidance.

You can read up on the regs at http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000184&propertyType=document#P399_42452

The form itself is reproduced at Section 10. The information is a bit longer than the web address, you have been warned.

I was happily surprised to get VAT off the MBT's I bought. When I went into the shop the lady asked why I was interested in these shoes. I replied because of arthritis. On finally purchasing a pair she gave me a form to fill in which was only my name address and to write in the appropriate box arthritis and sign the form. Voila!!

I hasten to add I did buy them in a shop selling items to help with back pain and so on.

You are a mine of information, Joseph.

I have only ever had VAT off in disability shops when I have been asked if I qualify ... but sometimes buy disability stuff in mainstream shops ... watch out Mr VAT man from now on!!

I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

Thanks for that piece of advice - I had no idea that you could get VAT off these aids. :D

(Incidentally, did you know that the majority of people working for HMRC and VAT workers are tax women not tax-men? (I don't work there, but I know someone who does). Seems a bit sexist to blame the men all the time. (Mind you, I bet that the senior politicians who decide about taxation are probably mostly men, so maybe we shouldn't let the men off after all! ) )

We men have broad shoulders. They are no good, but they are broad. We would be blamed anyway, so better make the most of it.
