Steroid injection - muscle or joint?

Hi there
I have to go for a steroid injection next week to ease inflammation/stiffness in small joints (hands feet). Am I right to think this will be one needle in one muscle (eg backside!) The nurse definitely said the singular injection (no plural) but I did not think to ask for more info at the time. I can't see them injecting every joint as we'd be there all day!
Has any one else had an injection in their muscle for inflammatory arthritis? Did it work? How long for? Any side effects?
Any advice you can give will be great.
Thank you

Hi Sugarbuttie - have just replied to your other post with a bit about steroid injection but just seen this post too.
As a "general destiffener" I think it is likely that you will be given one intramuscular injection (probably depo-medrone) - into the backside (how very dignified)!
Everyone's experience will be different but, in my case, I was skipping like a spring lamb within hours (if I remember rightly). The only side effect I noticed was being very "hyper" and I found it very difficult to sleep. But it was definitely worth it for the relief! In terms of how long it lasts, I think it really depends on the level of inflammation. I'm sorry but I can't remember how long the effects lasted for me though - although I think the intention is that they give at least a couple of weeks of relief. I'm sure someone else will be along soon though with more experience of this than me.
Good luck!

Hi There
I have had two for arthritis in knee...Its in the quad muscle where they inject but if you have in hands and feet they probably will do those two places. They are restricted to how many they can do in periods of time (usually a couple of months)......I found they made no difference to me at all, as someone else has quoted some jump around like spring lambs but dont expect that as I did to be in immediate relief as it may not happen.
Good luck however and you may be a lucky one...

I have had steroids injected in my knee joints and one ankle joint, and depo in my backside. All were equally useless. Whatever they do, rest well afterwards to give it a chance to take effect. It never ceases to amaze me how much we all vary in our response to the same thing. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

I've had the Depo-medrone in the butt! I've had it twice, just before starting mtx and then when I started Leflonomide. I feel the benefit within hours and it lasts about 2 - 3 months. The only side effects I've had are chronic munchies which means I have to try really hard not to put on weight - not always succesfull  :roll:0

Hi there,
I tend to have these depo medrone intra muscular steroid injections about 3 times a year. For me I usually feel the effects after a day or two and find I don't need to take as many pain killers, the arthritis doesn't go away but it certainly loosens me up a bit and makes getting out of bed a lot easier in the mornings.
For me they usually last about 5 - 6 weeks, although the very first few I had seemed to be more effective and last about 8 weeks. Perhaps my body is getting used to them ?
Good Luck - hope it works for you, as others mention, not everyone finds them beneficial xxx0 -
Hi
Think it might be in your BUM
he he!!
They gave me one first visit to the rheumy's
Good job I had me best knickers on eh?
As DD said - we vary hugely in our response - gotta be worth a try

Thanks for all your replies - I think it is the depo one in the backside that I will be having. How daft does this sound....I can't wait to have a needle in my backside! These sure are glamorous times!0

[Hi there I have had several steroid injection in the backside, I tend to feel a lot worst for a few days then it does help for about a month, although I still have to nearly as many painkillers, I also find a have lot more energy I have PA and get really tired and I think this is best thing about them. But if the hospital ever gets is finger out I'm hoping to start on humira any time now so I continue to live in hope for a painfree future.
