Well ...... I exaggerate  so you can stop laughing now!

in reality one patch of velcro about in inch long that fastens one of the straps to my resting (night-time) splint has lost it's sticky :x and it is the most important one that pulls my wrist into the splint. so it isn't much use.

So .... being a practical kind of girl :lol: I rang the OT dept thinking they could send me out a bit of the stuff by post so I could stick it on myself ..... It isn't really rocket-science but ..... oh no, I have to actually go to the hospital and see the OT  ...... on 23rd July

so .... I'm back to managing without it for a while.

Oops indeed Wonky! What a pain. Hope you will be able to manage without it until 23rd July..... Such a pain for just a piece of sticky eh!

Hi Wonky....I thought you had some super human strength when I read your topic heading.:lol::lol:

still...it is a real nuisance for you to do without. If it weren't for the fact that these resting splints are individually moulded I would have sent you down one of mine :!:

23rd seems a long time to wait.....could she not squeeze you in sooner?

    hugs,

    Irisxx

ps. what about using 'no nails' or some other strong glue to stick the tab back on as a temporary measure..

What about a bit of gaffa tape around it for time being?
think it is actually called Duck tape

thanks Tilly, Dorcas & Page :D

My hubby and I have been debating tonight what I might be able to get away with using to help me out but will not leave too much 'evidence' (in the form of sticky residue etc  ) for when I have to take the splint in - I remember what effort it took both of us to take the adhesive off when she took off the padding she used at first round the edges

So ...... am going to try getting some old tubigrip over the wider hand part and see if that will keep my wrist in place ..... if not then I might have to construct a more cunning plan tomorrow  Duct tape it may yet be :lol::lol:

I wish it was my left hand and not my right hand one that is wonky ...... but that's just how it is

I know the OT has a huge caseload .... that was the earliest appointment ... I hadn't expected to need an appointment  .... but 18 days will fly by no doubt!

    thanks & hugs

    Hi Wonky
Sounds like you don't know your own strength !!
Duck tape seems like a good idea to me. Don't worry about leaving any tell tale signs & sticky residue. The OT will probably give you a prize for ingenuity.

    :lol::lol::lol::lol: I see you've met my OT then :wink::lol::lol:

Truly if I had been able to talk to her she may well have sent me the stuff out ..... but I don't really mind going to see her ..... we'll have a laugh & I can ask her a few things whilst I'm there.

I can report that the tubigrip idea is definitely worth a try .... just got the fun of getting it on .... and then hoping I don't need to get it off in a hurry   :lol:

I'll let you know how I get on

    thanks

    Hi Wonky

Do hope you can find a temporary measure that works, seems a while to be coping without it all for the want of a bit of velcro thingy. :?
Let us know if the tubigrip stuff does the job in the meantime?

    Take care
    love

    Hi Wonky,

I hope the tubigrip thing works but he is on his way up with some silage tape and some baler twine in his pockets

I would use tape I think.... but I do tend to use the 2 things aforementioned far too much :lol::lol:

How long before you will be able to get to OT though? I hope they can see you soon. Slurps and ((( ))) xx

Duct Tape is used for joining large heating ducts, it's American in origin. Gaffer Tape is the British equivalent, used by a lighting crew Gaffer, (lighting supervisor, theatre or film set), to stick down or tape up lighting cables out of the way.

The term is now used for any wide, cloth based sticky tape. Not suitable for contact with skin as it may cause irritation. But you could tape the Velcro piece in place.

    :D:D:D:D:D It worked :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

thanks for all the replies - gratefully received.

Well last night the tubigrip worked ok .... after a few tweaks.

I think I'll stick with that tonight but I now have several plans in reserve should I need them

A positive point I thought about .... As I will be seeing the OT anyway now I can see if I can get another pair of her 'magic' gloves (oedema gloves) as the pairs she gave me are looking pretty worn out

best pleading smile ready for the 23rd :lol::lol:

Hi Wonky - definitely attempt repairs!! So what if it leaves evidence ... better than going without whilst waiting for appointment. You are allowed to have a new splint occasionally you know! You could burn a tiny hole in the splint and thread a lace though to tie - if someone would tie it for you. Or is the velcro worn smooth or has it come detached? If it is just not sticky sticking to itself anymore it can sometimes be revived if you pick it with a needle (have done this on S's shoes/trainers, though eventually it does stop gripping altogether...)

    Speedy
I have had OA since mid twenties. It affects my hips and knees. I had a THR on the left aged 30 and now have a resurface-replacement on the right - done May 2010.

HI TOni :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: see did it work?

HI Speedy .... it's the sticky that holds the velcro onto the splint itself .... the velcro fastens fine to the strap .... just doesn't stay on the splint

the tubigrip is helping so I'll be ok I think - thanks for the ideas though
