Hi only49. I have not heard of wax for arthritis but I did get wax treatment when I broke my arm a few years ago. After the plaster was taken off my arm I attended a "physio clinic". The physio assessed me on my first visit and gave me a list of excercises to do and then I just went along once or twice a week and did the excercises on my own. Dipping my arm into a bath full of warm wax and then wrapping a sort of tinfoil blanket round it and sit till I felt that it was cooling down. It felt great when I put it on but when it cools and I had to peel it off it was horrible. Arm felt all damp and clammy and no amount of washing seemed to get rid of that funny feeling for hours.

Hi, When I was at work, with disabled people, the physio used a wax bath, you put your hands in and the hot wax helps the pain. It also makes your skin feel lovely! I have a feeling you can get them as beauty salons!!!!

    Hi only49

My hands are really bad at the moment so I actually bought a wax hand kit yesterday.. It was £39.99 from Argos, but you can get the same kit off Amazon. It comes with 3 x1 lb packets of wax, which should last a while! You plug the bowl in and wait for the wax to heat up and melt and then dip your fingers/hands in and out several times very quickly and then put your hands in polythene bags for 20 minutes (these also come with the kit). The wax sets immediately. It can get very warm. so you have to make sure it's not too hot ..

After 20 minutes you peel the polythene bags off and the wax is stuck to the inside of the bags and you just peel it off and put it back in the bowl to be reused. It comes off in quite large pieces. Ididn't find that a problem at all and my hands are nice and smooth afterwards.

It takes many hours to heat up initially and then you leave it plugged in all the time - if you are going to use it regularly - which I am.. I am just leaving it plugged in on a kitchen work surface. It's just a little bit messy if you are not careful - I am leaving tiny flakes of wax around.

I've used it 3 times today and am just going to use it again before I go to bed. I personally am finding it really soothing for my poor, very tender, very sore hands!!

    Hi Only,

I'm thinking of getting one of those too. Will very interested in how you get on with it. I was wondering if it would help my hands.
I have seen them in a catalogue but do not really know how to use them properly.

    Good luck with the seach.

Thanks Marion, you have just answered my questions.:lol:

    Hi sylvia!

I use a hot wax therapy unit at home and am always recommending it....it is so soothing and provides some relief from arther pain. I use it 3 times a day...more if need be... for my hands and feet. It was the hand therapist at local hospital who first of all used hot wax as part of the treatment...and then suggested I get one for using at home. very easy to set up and use!!

I bought mine from Argos a year ago....Champney's Hot Wax Unit...cost me £39.99 but may have gone up/ down in cost since then. Comes complete with the wax you need...lasts ages..and you can also buy additional paraffin wax replacement blocks too.
    you won't regret buying it...

Just thought i'd say that i've just come back from a week at a health spa and as my feet give me so much trouble i had lots of work on them, massages etc but i also had a wax bath on them and have to say they did feel better afterwards and after a week of treatments i have more movement in them then i did - dont know if it will last tho!

Has anyone had reflexology with arthritis? - does it help?
